Tobias
I woke to Tris gently shaking me awake, her soft smile spread across her lips.
“Good morning Tobias, you slept late.” She said.
“Good morning Tris, you’re up early.” I countered smiling, as I reached up and gave her a soft kiss on her cheek.
She gave me a playful shove, her hand on the spot I kissed her, and said, “Whatever, we’re both up now. Wanna go get some breakfast?” She answered her own question by rising out of bed with a yawn. “Come on slowpoke.”
I rose out of bed with a smile, “What if I didn’t want breakfast.”
“Too bad then huh?” She said. I had to smile; partially because of her reply, but mostly because she didn’t realize she had the worst bed head I’ve ever seen.
“So, you’re just going down right now? Without getting ready?” I said, stifling a chuckle.
“Well, yea why? Expecting me to put on a dress and walk down there? I look good enough to go and grab a muffin at least. We have police, but we don’t have fashion police!” She said skeptical.
“You might want to check the mirror first.” I said, a wide smile spreading across my face.
“What’s so funny? I’m in your clothes if…” she turned to the mirror, seeing her hair she broke off. She blushed, and said “Ok, maybe I’ll fix my hair… then we can go! Still not changing though!” She ran to the bathroom and shut the door.
I smiled again and went to the kitchen for a glass of water. After about three minutes; Tris opened the door with combed down hair. I loved it when Tris kept her hair down, with it carelessly lying along her shoulders.
“Better?” she said, eyeing me.
“Better.” I said with a smile, linking my hand with hers.
She looked at me with round, shinning eyes, and smiled. She began towards the door, our hands still intertwined. Once out of the apartment, we looked at each other, and smiled. You’re on then Tris! We unhooked our hands and ran down the dim hallways, the small breeze we created rushing past us. Tris was ahead of me, a determined look on her face; the baggy clothes of mine she was wearing, and her hair trailing in the breeze. I was the muscular one, but Tris was defiantly most agile. She rounded a corner on her heels, flashing me a smug look before disappearing. With that, I sped up, a smile spreading wide along my face. I turned the corner fast, seeing Tris up ahead. Yet, even though I knew I had lost; all of the morning’s tiredness was gone, this run replacing it by adrenaline. Tris stopped at the door to the pit, breathing mildly heavy. I came up behind her, losing once again, the race down here.
Her eyes were full of smug victory, and with a wide smile she said, “Beat ya again.”
“Next time I’ll win.” I said giving her a push as I stepped into the pit before she could enter. “Beat you to breakfast though.” I said with a cheeky smile, opening the door for her.
“Whatever cheater. Now let’s go grab a muffin.” She said linking her hand with mine.
We walked down to the breakfast bar, laughing and smiling; grabbing two muffins, we went and sat down at a table. We ate in silence for a while, enjoying the tastes of the muffins.
“So,” said Tris, putting down the muffin. “What do you want to talk about?”
This is my chance to ask her! “Um, how about…” I was cut off by a loud bout of laughter. I looked annoyed up to see Christina, Will, and Uriah enter the room. So much for my question… Tris signaled them over with a wave. Even though I was annoyed, I couldn’t blame them; thoughts of annoyance being replaced to a welcoming of friends.
“Muffins again Tris? I swear that’s all you ever eat at breakfast now!” said Christina teasingly, sitting down next to Tris with a smile.
“What can I say? Muffins are good!” She said defensively.
Uriah came and sat next to me with a big omelet, and said “Now Tris, this is a meal of champions right here!” Tris just rolled her eyes and took a big bite of her muffin. Uriah smiled and shrugged, taking abite of his omelet.
Will went and sat next to Christina, a big slice of French toast on his plate. “So Four, Tris got you sucked into muffins then?” Will said eyeing the muffin I was nibbling on.
“I happened to like muffins before Tris started eating them!” I said, throwing a bit of muffin at him.
“Geez, alright. No need to throw deadly muffin bombs!” He said with a laugh, and taking a bite of his French toast.
We spent the rest of the morning at the table, laughing and talking. After about an hour Tris rose and said, “Be right back guys. Just have to go to the restroom.”
I watched her leave before turning my attention back to the group, eating the last of my muffin.
Tris
I walked out of the corridor, the dim light and calm silence soothing. The restroom was a way down so I could have some time to think before I got down there. I rounded a corner and continued to walk. After some time a thought occurred to me. Where is everyone? Most could still be sleeping, but I should have at least seen a few other Dauntless pass by now. I ran down to the bathroom after that thought. I emerged after, still not seeing a single soul. Weird… I thought as I began to walk back down the hall. An eerie edge began to settle over me. Stop being so superstitious! You walk down this hallway everyday! What’s the diff… My thoughts were disturbed as I felt a cold hand slide over my mouth, stifling my scream.
“Beatrice Prior,” said a cold and familiar voice, “you’re coming with me.”
