how I ended up in the water

that same day
you came home from work holding two plastic bags

'what's inside?'

inside the first was a movie I'd never heard of

and in the other was a small red paper bag wrapped in plastic

'it's popcorn'

I smiled

I knew what popcorn was

I wasn't an alien

but I found it cute how you explained

and somehow you managed to make me smile

I always wonder how you do that

you say the littlest things
and boom

a smile ends up on my face

after the popcorn was made
we sat on the small couch together

side by side

your arm was touching my side

I looked over at you
