The next few minutes were probably the most stressful of my life. We were fine at first, casually walking back the way John suggested, but then when we rounded a corner and there stood Vernon. Let's just say all hell broke loose.
We ran, attempting to be as quiet as possible, which was pretty hard considering I was already out of breath by the time we bolted down the hallway, narrowly avoiding Vernon.
"This is just fan-freaking tastic." I said to myself as we skidded around a corner. Why had I thought this was going to be fun? Maybe because it was, there was something about impending doom that gave me an adrenaline rush.
We made our way down a set of stairs and down another hallway when someone other than myself finally spoke.
"Hold it!" John said in an attempt to get everyone to stop running for a moment. We all skidded to a stop, looking at him urgently.
"We have to pass through the cafeteria." He said, pointing back in the direction he wanted us to go. Andrew seemed to be the only one who wanted to objected.
"No," he said, "The activities hall."
John shook his head in annoyance. "Look, man, you don't know what you're talking about." he said.
Andrew got defensive. "No, you don't know what you're talking about!" he said.
I let out a huff of annoyance, intervening. "We don't have time for your bickering, just shut up and let's go before we get caught." Allison made a high-pitched sound in the back of her throat and I jumped slightly in surprise. I had almost forgotten she was even here.
The boys let out a huff of annoyance but did as they were told, and we all took off, going towards the activities hallway. We made our way down more steps and a seemingly endless supply of hallways before we got to the activities hall. It would've worked if it weren't for the fact that it was completely closed off.
"Great idea." John said sarcastically. Andrew fumed. "Fuck you!" he yelled. Claire joined in on the fun, "No, fuck you, we should've listened to John!"
All of this bickering was giving me a headache. "All of you shut the hell up, alright?" I said, trying to keep my voice calm. Brian looked horrified.
"We're screwed," he said, "We're all screwed."
I shook my head, letting out a heavy sigh. But, before I could even say anything, John spoke up.
"No," He said, pulling the weed from out of his pocket. "Not all of us, just me." And, before I could even protest, he tossed the bag to me, said, "Keep this safe for me, sweets." and took off down the hallway, yelling, "I WANT TO BE AN AIRBORN RANGER!".
I blinked, staring after him for a moment before shoving the bag into my pocket. "Come on," I said, edging away from the bars. "We better get going." No one objected, instead they followed me as I took off down the hallway and into the cafeteria.
We made it back to the library with time to spare, but everyone seemed glum.
"What's up with the sad faces?" I asked as I took a seat at my respective table. For a moment no one answered, and then Claire sat next to me, looking guilty.
"We just feel bad is all." She said.
"About what?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. Claire gave me a look, and then it all clicked in my head. "About leaving John behind?" I questioned. Claire nodded, but otherwise no one said anything else.
I scoffed, rolling my eyes. "Guys, come on, really? He'll be fine, he always is. Don't go doubting him now. Besides, if he didn't think you guys were worth it he wouldn't have went. He probably won't admit it but he considers you his friends now." Everyone looked at me in surprise. Hell, if I could i'd look at me in surprise too. Since when did I become the John whisperer?
Brian looked surprised. "Me? John's friend?" He asked. I grinned at him, because why not? John wouldn't admit it outloud but he liked these people, liked them enough to risk his own skin for them.
"Yes, dork, you're our friend." I said. Brian let his head fall onto the table, but I didn't miss the little smile that formed on his lips. It as quiet in the room again after that, and I decided that I hadn't been lying to them about being friends. I truly meant it, I considered all of them my friends. But, before I could dwell on that fact any longer, the library door opened and in came Vernon and John.
John went to his seat and grabbed his things, avoiding eye contact with everyone in the room. Vernon felt the need to explain what John had did, even though it was pretty pointless since we all had a pretty good idea already.
"Wise Guy here has taken it upon himself to go to the gymnasium." Vernon said. "I'm sorry to inform you, you'll be without his services for the rest of the day." John rolled his eyes in annoyance.
"B-O-O-H-O-O." He said. Vernon looked about ready to swing at him.
"Everything's just a big joke to you, huh?" Vernon asked, staring at John. "Like the false alarm you pulled on friday, that was just so goddam funny, right? What if your dope was on fire, Bender? It wouldn't be too funny then, would it?"
John batted his eyelashes innocently. "That'd be impossible because it's in Brookes pants, sir." The rest of us tried not to laugh at that, but it was no use. Vernon's eyes swept around the room, a glare on his face.
"You think that's cute?" He asked. "You think he's 'bitch'n', is that it?" I grinned nice and wide, teeth full on display.
"Yes, sir," I said mockingly. "I sure as hell do." Vernon glared at me and marched right over to my table. He leaned on it, staring me straight in the eyes.
"You think you're somethin' special, huh? Well, news flash for you, sweetheart, you're just like your boyfriend over there, a bum. You think this is all fun and games now, but look at yourself in five years and tell me if you're happy about what you see. I bet you won't even be able to look at yourself." We had a silent stare off for a moment, and I kept my face neutral. I think he wanted his words to get to me, but in truth they didn't. I know once I get out of here I'm going to do something great, and one opinionated douchebag wasn't going to stop me.
After a moment Vernon moved away, going to get John from his seat. "Let's go." He said, grabbing the boy's arm and trying to pull him up. John pulled away from him, telling the man not to touch him, before walking out of the room like nothing had happened. They left as abruptly as they had entered.
It was silent in the room for a moment, no one really sure if they should speak after that whole fiasco. Andrew was the first to break the silence.
"So..." Andrew said, "What're we gonna do with a bag of...um....that?" He motioned to my pocket, A grin formed on my lips.
"We're gonna smoke it, of course." I said. Everyone looked surprised and I had to repress an eyeroll. "What'd you think we were gonna do with it? Chew it?"
Brian looked uncomfortable. "Umm... how does one 'smoke it'?" I stared at him before shaking my head in disbelief.
"Get me some paper and everyone gather around, I'll show you how to properly roll a joint." Surprisingly they did as they were told, pulling up seats to my table and handing me a library book. I pulled the weed out of my pocket and began casually going through the steps as if I was just giving them ingredients to bake a cake.
"Step one, you have to break it up. You can't do anything with this," I held up a bud. "It's too big." I tore it apart with my fingers and lined it up on the table. I continued on with the rest of the steps, trying not to feel like I was on a freaking cooking channel as I went. They all watched me with genuine curiosity, and it took all I had not to stop and just burst out laughing.
Once all of the steps were done I help up the finished product. "And here is our finished product." I said. I couldn't decide if Brian looked horrified or impressed. Probably both.
"Can we... um...like-" I cut Brian off with a gin. "Smoke it?" I asked. Brian nodded and I answered enthusiastically. "Yes, yes we can." I pulled a lighter out of my pocket and lit one end.
Yeah, these people are definitely my friends now.A.N
