Chapter 1

            Beep, beep, beep, beep.

I wake up to the annoying beep of my alarm clock. Dang it, I thought. What time is it? The sky’s still dark, for Pete’s sake! What sane human being would wake up at this time? I reached for my phone, and checked the time. It was 5:30 in the morning? Why is the sky so dark? Can’t I go back to sleep?

That was when I realized three things. One, I am officially a high school sophomore, Two, I am about to be stuck in the next ten months with a bunch of vain, hormonal, teenagers, and Three, I don’t even have an alarm clock.

“Marcia!” I heard someone call as soon as I arrived at school. I turned around to see my best friend Kaitlyn, whom I haven’t seen in a long time.

Kaitlyn was one of those quiet but popular ones. I think she earned herself the fame when she dated RJ Henderson once. Yes, the RJ on the school bus earlier. They did break it off after going into an on and off relationship for the past year. After they broke up, she went to what she loved the most: anime, anime, and more anime. It was a pity she didn’t find someone else for her. She was good looking. She had raven black hair and purple eyes. She was tall, like supermodel tall, and had a good body shape too. I, on the other hand, am the farthest thing from attractive. I had russet brown hair up to my chest and chocolate brown eyes. I was short, just four foot eleven and a half, and my body was the farthest thing from sexy.

“Hey Kaitlyn,” I said as I attempted to give her a hug. What? She was really tall for me. “Have you seen Killian?”

“Not yet,” she replied. “But he’s got to be around here somewhere.”

I shook my head. Knowing Killian, he would never head to really crowded places like this. After listing a bunch of places we think Killian was at that moment, we headed out to find our third best friend. We first tried the covered courts. We did find him, but we decided not to bother him. After all, he finally made it to the semi-honors class this year. We don’t want to ruin his happiness by stealing him away from his new friends.

“He seems really happy,” Kaitlyn said as we took our seats.

“Yep,” I replied. “Look at him being all giddy with a bunch of pretty nerds.” Kaitlyn laughed at that. Here at Columbus, we were sorted out into three kinds of sections: the honors, semi-honors, and general sections. The general sections were where the typical vain and horny teenagers are put together with the really quiet nerds who were lucky to have passed freshman year, just like Kaitlyn and I. The semi-honors were well… not complete nerds. They were the pretty, popular but smart kids. The honors class was where all the smart people are.

The program started shortly after that. It was basically like the program we had last year, an orientation kind of thing. Kaitlyn and I basically read our pocketbooks and manga comics the whole time. Hey, you would be doing that too if you already know all the Do’s and Don’ts of the school. The program was followed by a short break, where I had decided to head to the principal’s office to get my class schedule. Because of the long line outside, I insisted Kaitlyn that she should go and see Killian first. We didn’t want him thinking we didn’t come to our first day of school.

“Hey Marcia!” I heard a familiar tenor call from behind me. I turned around to see my old friend, Jacob Brandon. I remember him being a nice kid, and in the one year we’ve been friends, we’ve been through a lot of thick and thin. I did question his orientation sometimes, despite the fact that he keeps insisting he’s in a relationship with someone. I’ve never seen the unlucky girl, making me suspect more.
