Chapter 9

Alexa's pov

Here I was a long way from home, and anyone I knew.

I had no home and no job.

I was scared.

I had some money in savings but not a ton.

It wouldn't last forever.

What have I done?

I should have just stayed and told Jacob that we couldn't be together.

But no, I had to run away like I always do.

I couldn't go back now.

I didn't have anything to go back to.

I had no job, no home, and no Jacob.

I decided to try and find another job.

So, I sent out my resume to some new places.

I called back a few that was interested in me before.

I talked to one law firm that said they did want to hire me but after speaking to my former boss they were no longer interested.

That meant that Jacob knew I was looking for another job.

What did he say about me to make this form not want to hire me?

Why would he even do that?

How was I going to find work if he was sabotaging me?

I guess I needed to suck it up and make a call that I was dreading.

I needed to call Jacob.

I had to fix things before I could move on.

I was hurt that he would destroy my career.

This was what I was afraid of all along.

I knew that he would bring me nothing but trouble.

He would ruin me.

I didn't want to hear his voice, but I had to.

I only hoped I could hold it together long enough to fix this.

I picked up my phone and dialed Jacob's number.

He picked up on the second ring.

"Hello."

"Jacob what the hell are you telling people to make it so no one will hire me?"

I wasn't going to start off with that, but the more I thought about it the angrier I got.

"Well hello Alexa."

"Hello that's all you have to say seriously."

"Well unlike you I didn't run away without a word."

So that's what this was about.

"Are you seriously ruining my career just because I don't want to be with you?'

"Nice to know, and this has nothing to do with that. I simply told them that you're a flight risk. That you take off with no warning."

"How dare you. I have worked for your father for many years and he never once had a problem with me. It is his son that has the damn problem."

"Did you not leave without giving your two-week warning?"

"I had to get away from you."

"Your saying you had to leave you job, your home, everything just to get away from me?"

"Yes!"

"Well then I'm glad you're gone. I will put in a good word so you can find a job. Now leave me alone. I never want to hear from you again. You wanted to be away from me now you're getting your wish."

He hung up and I was left looking at my phone in shock.

This did not go how I planned.

I just once again screwed everything up.
