It had been quite a year so far, between the Golden Trio talking about Potter and his new favorite book and then Potter hooking up with the Weasley girl, and Granger picking a fight in the hospital wing with Lavender Brown over the youngest Weasley boy, but one thing made it super crazy, and that was the Slytherin Prince himself, Draco Malfoy.
Sure, he wasn't everyone's favorite person in the universe, but your families managed to stay respectable towards each other despite the differences in views, and you personally thought he was a decent guy under all the smugness he faked the past five years for attention and reputation. But he was acting odd all year and you were determined to figure it out.
It started when he rushed into the party with Slughorn's favorites, which you were invited to because of your family status in the Ministry. And with the cursing of Katie Bell, which had happened previously that month, and how he ate less and less all year and seemed to disappear during the late hours of the night. You decided to get to the bottom of this. So why not start with a little stalking trick?
He stood from the dinner table and made his way to the abandoned bathroom. You felt confused, why would he go in there? Then you heard the sniffling. Draco Lucius Malfoy never cried. You felt your heart clench at the sight. He stood at the sink, hands splayed at the sides, hair drooping into his face as he shook from head to toe with sobs, his tie and shirt in disarray. You moved closer to him, feeling like you should comfort him, but not knowing how. He turned and caught your eye, fear across his features, his grey eyes searching, pleading for you to not tell anyone. You reached a hand out and gently grabbed his shoulder, pulling him in for a hug. You felt yourself slide to the ground, the young Malfoy in your arms, and realized with a start what was going on without him saying a word. He was one of them, and he had a mission that was almost impossible to get out of. You lifted his head in your hands and pressed your forhead against his, breathing in his scent. You decided then that you would become his friend and help him get out of this problem of his. And all you could say was two words.
"Draco, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything you are having to do, but I'm promising you now, I will be your friend and help you. I promise." He sighed, a hiccuping sort of sound and smiled gently at you. That was what started one small hectic adventure to stop the war of the Wizarding World, and it was fine with you.
Draco eventually completed the task, but within limits. You two were forced on the run from the grounds by Professor Snape, after Dumbledore was out of comission and you couldn't have been happier. You had your newfound best friend at your side and you were going to right the wrongs before the war was over. And it all started with an emotional moment in an abandoned bathroom and two words.
