Steve looked amused at first, as though he was looking at Kana for the first time, his eyes filled with awe.
"You're not like the others, are you??"
Kana wondered what he meant. Not like the others?? Had Steve met someone else tonight??
"What do you mean?", she asked.
"You do know whose body this is, right?"
Kana felt discomfort the way he said it. Almost as if it were not his. Like someone else was using it.
"I'm guessing it's not yours then??", Kana said, unsure how it would sound.
Steve let out a laugh. A laugh that sounded like he was relieved. As if he had found what he was looking for.
Kana didn't like that, knowing that her opponent had achieved what he wanted, while she was still stuck with nothing.
Steve began again,
"Yes, this body belongs to a boy named Steve, who died a while ago. Why are you not terrified like the rest of the people I met??"
Kana felt something fall inside her. She still could not understand what was happening. Was Steve actually dead?? Or was he alive, making a mockery? Kana wanted answers, and to get them, she needed questions.
"Who are you??", she asked.
"Me?? You won't know even if I did tell you."
"Just. Answer."
Kana raised her sword threateningly.
"Okay, okay. My name is Karabaan."
Was he Karabaan all along??
Kana hesitated before asking her next question.
"What are you??"
"Hmm...?? So you did notice?? Well, I'm a superior species."
Kana's sword went up again.
"Okay, okay, I'm a demon. De-mon. Devil if you want. And believe me, I don't want to be here as much you. "
Kana couldn't believe it. She didn't need to. She had always accepted facts as they were. Never pondering on it's authenticity. Just accept, if it's true, it'll work out, if it's false, it'll become apparent.
"What are you doing here? Karabaan, was it??"
"Yes, Karabaan. And what I'm doing here, I have no idea. Steve chose to come here. "
The next second, he burst out laughing. Kana raised her sword again and he immediately shut up. When Kana continued to stay silent, he spoke up.
"He thought that he didn't die because his love for you kept him alive." He finished, still trying not to laugh.
Kana cringed, but still pushed on.
"So you can read his mind? Does he know about you? Why are you doing this? Why-"
"Wait", Steve, or Karabaan, cut her off and continued, " I'll tell you everything. On one condition."
"You're in no position to bargain." Kana said as she raised her sword. As she did, she saw something in Karabaan, or Steve, which triggered her pity.
Fear.
Karabaan was as scared as she was, maybe even more so.
"Okay fine, what's your condition??"
Karabaan looked as if someone just offered him the world. After a long sigh, he prepared himself to speak.
Kana expected him to suggest that she free him, but as everything else that night, nothing happened the way she expected it to happen.
"I'll tell you everything, if you help me."
