"Demons live in another... world, I guess.. or like another dimension or something... I'm not too sure. We don't ever cross, not anymore that is."
"Wait, why don't you know where you live??"
"Let me ask you something first. How old do you think I am??"
"I dunno... three thousand years or something...??"
"Hmm.. I though so, that would explain why you behave like that. I am in fact, 14 years old."
Kana was taken aback. Guilt flooded her as she though about what she was doing.
"What?!! You're younger than me!"
"Really??"
Before Karabaan even knew what was happening, he was immediately set free and food was being offered to him.
As he tried to continue speaking, Kana silenced him.
"Eat first.", she said.
As Karabaan took his first bite from what seemed like pasta, tears began rolling down his cheeks. He ate hungrily, and every bite triggered another tear.
Kana sat and waited. Suddenly feeling a lot more pleased with herself. Looking at him made her wonder if he really was a demon, or just a starving kid. Not that she actually believed he was a demon in the first place.
After Karabaan finished, he looked up at Kana and tried to speak.
"Thank you." He sniffled a sob and continued. "I hadn't eaten for days..."
"No problem. Anyway, you said you're 14 right?? Are human years and demon years the same? Or is there a time difference?" Kana asked, trying to close the space she created between them.
"I don't know...", then Karabaan's face lit up as he just thought of something.
"When was the internet invented??"
Kana spaced. The internet?? Why would he want to know that??
"1983...?", Kana said after she thought for a while.
"Exactly the same year we published the idea", Karabaan said with a smile. "There doesn't seem to be a time difference."
Kana immediately had another dozen questions popping up in her head, but she asked what was more important.
"Are you tired??"
Karabaan was a little surprised by how much differently he was being treated now.
"Very", he answered honestly.
"There's a bed in that room if you want to get some sleep, it has some clothes too with a bathroom. You can rest."
Karabaan hesitated.
"I'll lock the door from the outside though. It's your choice."
Karabaan still wasn't sure. Minutes later, he found himself trusting Kana as he made his way to the room she had pointed to. As he entered, he heard the door close with the click of the lock. He wondered how a mere human girl, barely 2 years older than him, was able to take care of herself so well. And treat a demon like himself with so much care. He caught himself smiling. After a really rough month, Kana seemed like a goddess. A goddess with long, red hair.
Immediately he realized why Steve had fallen for her.
