Not enough

She wondered how it was that she felt this way,
How it felt like it was always written on her face,
Her pain, constantly thrumming, constantly invading her mind.
She wondered how all this couldn't be seen,
She didn't consider herself a master of disguise.

A smile, a laugh, an excuse.

She would think about her future,
Not being able to see anything there,
She thought it would go away.
She denied it, like you do a weed, allowing it time to grow.

A smile, a laugh, an excuse.

The noise, invading each brain cell,
Holding her thoughts hostage.
She couldn't understand.
Did everyone feel this way?
The overwhelming pain,
The restriction and tightness wrapping her heart
In its claws.
She didn't know what was happening to her.
The anger that drooled out every time she spoke to those she loves.
The overpowering threatening sadness.
The constant insults caused by herself.

A smile, a laugh, an excuse.

Why? Why did they think it was okay?
She didn't know what she was doing,
Not knowing how or why she found comfort in what she did.
But she did. And that was how things went.
Until one day, it wasn't enough,

It wasn't enough.

A smile,

a laugh,

an excuse.
