Jungkook POV:
flashback:
I noticed the girl who walked in with an angry looking face right away after she stepped into the math classroom this morning. It was Park Chaewon. It seemed as though she hadn't changed a lot from when we were younger as I took in her appearance. I was going to say hi to her, but then I suddenly remembered that she wouldn't recognize me anymore. She had lost all of her memories related to me and my family.
Chaewon and I grew up together in a big mansion on the hillside away from the city. It was called Hillside Mansion (pretty self explanatory). Her mom was my dad's sister. When her mom died, Chaewon's family cut relations with mine, and they moved into the city. Before they left, Chaewon's dad asked me to erase all of her memories of me and my family, and so I did. I was sad that she had to go, but had to accept the truth. So Chaewon was basically my cousin.
I was even more sure that it was the Park Chaewon I knew because of the family pendant around her neck. It was the sign of a vampire that her mother gave to her. I recognized the metal to be silver.
A protection pendant.
Chaewon's mother grew up with my family of vampires, so she knew about us. It was only normal for her to give Chaewon the pendant. I mean, she was human so it was necessary...
I hid a small chuckle when I watched Chaewon get scolded.
Yep, that's the same old Chaewon alright.
Whispering a few words to her, I made sure that she didn't recognize me.
Good.
The rest of my day was an average one. I got used to the school environment, was run over by girls, and answered a question in AP World History. After school I got on the bus to visit my aunt, which was Chaewon's mother, since it was her death anniversary that day. It was the least I could do to make it up to them.
present:
"I need to buy flowers but I don't know where to get them, can I just follow you? I'm sorry about your mom by the way," I said after she told me that she too, was going to visit my aunt in the cemetery.
"Yeah whatever," she said, "thanks."
"I'll take that as a yes then?" I asked and smiled at her.
I caught a slight smile. She still has the same dimples on the left side of her cheeks, I thought.
When the bus stopped, I followed her off the bus and walked into a very nicely decorated flower shop.
"Chaewon! Darling! How are you? Off to visit your mother again?" said the lady who was working here.
"Yes ajumma. Can I have a bouquet of white roses please?" she said sweetly as she placed three 5 dollars bills on the counter.
"Ah, Chaewonn-ie, you don't need to pay, it will be as a gift from ajumma okay?" the lady said. She then looked at me and raised a teasing (or questioning, I honestly couldn't tell) eyebrow at Chaewon.
"No, I think eomma would like it better if I payed myself," she replied and smiled. I noticed the subtle pursing of her lips and how she slightly shook her head at the ajumma. Chaewon then turned around and gave me an explanation, "I go visit eomma very often so this ajumma knows me quite well."
I nodded. She sure loves her mom a lot, just like when she was younger.
After we left the flower store, there wasn't much talking. She told me to keep distance from her because she doesn't like being talked to when she is sad. Of course I knew that from when we were very young. And so I did. I walked behind her, as quietly as I could, and that's when I noticed the laminated maple leaf pinned on her yellow backpack...
flashback:
It was the last day that Chaewon was going to be at Hillside Mansion. I was sad to see her leave because she was the only friend I had. I had lost her because of my wrong doings. Ever since that day, my parents swore that I would never get to see her, and that I will be homeschooled because they didn't trust me with my behavior anymore. Previously that day, Chaewon's father had told me to erase all of Chaewon's memories of my family and myself. I had to obey, because I, no, my family, owed their family so much. I was walking under the sulking trees, with leaves falling as they laid out a red colored path for me when suddenly, a red maple leaf fell on my head. I remembered when Chaewon and I used to play in the leaves together during when winds got chilly and the trees magically turned red. I went back home, and as she was packing I quietly slipped the red maple leaf I had laminated into her bright yellow backpack. I'd always teased her about the bag being too big for her tiny self. I erased her memories at the doorway, and no goodbyes were said. Her dad dragged her into the car and drove into the setting sun.
present:
Now, when I walk behind her, I somehow see the young Chaewon, skipping on the stone pavement, with her once very huge bright yellow backpack, which is not very bright and huge on her anymore.
Suddenly realizing I was very far behind, I sped up to her and asked out of curiosity, "Where did you get that maple leaf? It's really pretty."
"Oh that? I found it in my backpack when I moved into the city when I was 7. It reminded me of someone but I have no idea who that person is. I kept it anyways. It's really pretty isn't it?" She smiled, "You know, before I moved into the city, I use to live in a huge mansion."
"Oh really?" I pretended not to know, "Cool."
"Who are you visiting anyways?" She asked.
"Oh... umm... my grandpa."
I made that up on the spot. But it was also partly true, since my grandpa was also buried in this cemetery.
We got to the cemetery and walked towards my aunt's grave.
"You can go see your grandpa, thanks for coming with me," she said while smiling. I smiled back, resisting myself from complimenting her on her beautiful smile.
"You should smile more," I blurted out, "It's pretty."
She turned a bright pink, and as much as I wished it weren't true, I probably did the same. I could feel my ears turn red, and it burned.
I turned away and said, "Umm... see you later," and walked off.
I sat on a bench in the distance and watched her as she placed her flowers on her mom's grave. She closed her eyes and stayed there for a good half hour. I didn't want to disturb her, so I just sat there and watched. I suddenly remembered how Chaewon and I used to hold hands and walk to grandma's grave together and pay our respects for him when we were young. The painfully real memory of how we knelt by his tombstone, held each other's hands, closed our eyes and said, Dear grandma, may you rest in peace in heaven flowed into my mind. I was reminded of how we'd then stand up together and leave, still holding hands with cheeky smiles smothered on our faces. A tear fell from my eye and I jumped back to reality. By that time Chaewon was already standing beside me, with tear marks on her cheeks, making it very obvious that she cried.
"Are you done already?" she asked, "You didn't have to wait for me."
"Oh umm... yes I'm done. Let's go," I said, turning my head away from her and wiping my tears away.
There wasn't much talking as we walked home either. When we were about to part ways I noticed her stop.
"Umm... thanks for today," she said while blushing, "Don't expect me to be nice to you tomorrow!" she said as she puffed out her cheeks and ran away.
How cute, I thought. I smiled to myself.
