• Chapter Five: ComicCon And A Broken GPS •
I sighed in relief as I ducked back into my seat in class. Mrs. Waterman had already given me the "You took way too long please don't make me lose my job" speech and everyone was writing their essays quietly. I opened my notebook but I couldn't write anything. All I could think about was Hiana sitting alone in the girls locker room. In my defense, there really wasn't much else I could do with her and I knew girls PE wasn't until after lunch so I could hide her there at least for the morning.
I still wasn't sure if I totally believed everything Hiana had been telling me. For all I know she was a mental institution escapee who went to a costume store. But I really did want to believe her. This could be the only half entertaining thing to ever happen to me. I recounted the things I knew about Hiana and where she might be from. So far all I really know is that her planet most likely doesn't have rain or cars and she could have some kind of otherworldly powers. If I was Sherlock Holmes and this was a murder mystery, I would be very far from figuring out who the killer was.
Finally I was freed by the bell. I waited to catch up to Logan as everyone evacuated the room as if there was a fire. Logan gave me a frown as we cleared the upstairs hallway quickly on the way to our second classes.
"I think I'm going to drop out." He moaned sarcastically, running his hand through his hair.
I groaned along with him, offering humor to comfort him. "Hey maybe if we each write 750 words and then just mash it all together she'll take our essay as a group project."
Logan laughed and I stopped beside him at the locker we shared. I braced myself as Logan vicously put in the combination and swung the door open. The smell of must, old bananas and the desperation to pass high school wafted into the air. I took my Chemistry textbook from Logan, brushing it off in an attempt to rid the stench.
"You know, I've been thinking--"
"Wow, that's a new one." I pushed Logan's shoulder back.
"Oh, shut up." He cursed, "We should clean out this locker, it's really starting to smell like something died in there and I don't wa--"
Suddenly the usual murmur of between class conversation flatlined and you could practically feel the entire hallway shift gaze. I felt heat on my back and I used every bit of strength I had in me not to turn around. I knew exactly what was behind me.
"Gavin what the hell is this chick doing she looks like she was trying to go to ComicCon but her GPS got her lost and she ended up here instead..." Logan said under his breath, laughing. Everyone was staring at her.
"--Gavin I really need to talk to you." She grabbed the back of my arm and I finally twisted around. My eyes locked with hers and I followed down to her shiny boots. She looked like a maniac and now, I did too. So much for being invisible. Not one person in the hallway looked away from us and a look of mass confusion had planted itself across Logan's face.
I watched Hiana move her hands up slowly and time seemed to slow. She was about to do something else but the situation had already gone too far. I grabbed Hiana by the wrist and jerked her, head down, into a supply room. I shut the door and locked it in one swift motion. My face fell into my hands and I let out a long sigh.
"You cannot keep doing this. I can't try and hide you from everyone Hiana. I'm at school and I just want to go to class like a normal person and--"
"--I was trying to stop time so nobody would see us but you wouldn't let me! That's besides the point, I think my parents are trying to contact me." She interrupted. "I think that's what the meteor was last night."
