The Rat

There was a room in the building no one liked to speak about, The Storage Room. Inside this Storage Room was a forgotten animatronic. His name was The Rat. He was an old animatronic that used to sing and dance for young children of all ages. Now he just sat in his chair all day, deactivated and decommissioned. Despite being offline the staff never went near the room he resided in. New employees would often ask what was inside, but nobody was allowed to tell them. Because the thing was, Rat wasn't completely offline. Every night he and the other robots would reactivate whenever the doors were shut and the moon was high above the night sky. The moment 12:00 AM hit Rat became active. He rose from his chair and stretched, followed by a mechanical yawn. Dusting himself off, he lumbered towards the Storage Room's door and exited into the Secondary Party Room. "Now, what kind of trouble can I get myself into tonight?" he asked aloud, a smile creeping onto his face. Loud, jarring voices echoed suddenly throughout the building. Rat twinged at the sound of them, turning his head in attention towards the voices coming from the Performance Room. Rat instantly recognized the voices as the head performers, Candy and Cindy. Those two were constantly arguing over insignificant details, and worst of all Rat was always expected to put an end to it. "Oh brother." He sighed. As he stepped into the stuffy, colorful room he noticed the two on stage. "Well, I just think you should've watched where you were going!" shouted the pink cat Cindy. "No, it was clearly you're fault to begin with!" The blue feline Candy bellowed back at her. "Oh, screw you Candy!" Cindy yelled once more. "Yeah?! Well screw you too!" Candy shouted. Unable to stand the sound of them, Rat marched towards the stage until he was right in front of the quarreling twins. "Alright, alright, break it up, break it up! How is anyone supposed get anything done when you two are bickering like this?!" The Rat glared down at the smaller duo. His eyes lit up like a phantom's. The two were clearly taken aback by this sudden gesture, they stepped back from the towering rodent. His eyes were still locked on them, and he began to growl lowly. "S-sorry Rat, we promise to get along better" spoke Candy the cat. "Yeah, just don't hurt us." Cindy remarked. Rat's eyes went back to normal as he began to regain his posture and calm down a bit. "That's nice to hear. But don't expect me to be so lenient next time." And with that he marched off back towards the Storage Room. "Forget enjoying myself, I just wanna get some shuteye." Rat was sure the twins' arguing had given him a headache. He reentered his room and turned to close the door. "I hate being here. I miss the old days. I miss the sound of music filling every room. I miss hide and seek, I miss the children." Rat sulked back into his chair, his head facing the tiled floor. A single light flickered, trying to illuminate the chair Rat was sitting upon. His metallic hands began to tremble as nostalgia rushed through his mind. "I miss Cat" He said, in a much softer tone than before. As he made that last statement he felt something run down his face. Black, oily tears streamed from his large black eyes. "D-damn." It wasn't natural for The Rat to cry, but when he did he felt weak. And that, to him, was the most annoying feeling of them all. Even more annoying than all the other robots in the building. And yes, even more annoying than the twins' never-ending arguments. Memories of a place long forgotten, his heart couldn't take much more. Yet, as much as he hated the crummy old building, it was the only thing that kept him from forgetting. Forgetting about his past, the children, his friends, his best friend. As he wiped the stains off his face, he sighed a pain filled sigh. "What am I gonna do with myself?"
