"ANGELA!" I landed on the ground, getting beside her.
The man was shot dead instantly.
"Angela." I mumbled, tears running down my face.
Mercy let out a tiny groan.
"MERCY IS DOWN!" I hollered into my com. My eyes were too blurred to see her blue eyes staring into mine. "Secure the perimeter!" I commanded my group.
The group rushed.
"Why did you jump in front of me?"
"Because I protect the ones I-." Her voice was barely audible. She coughed.
"Angela--This should be me right now. You don't need to take a bullet for me-"
"Yes I do..."
"No you don't. Angela, you might die." The thought of her death made me choke down a loud sob.
I put my hands on her wound, trying to stop the bleeding. I took off my uniform jacket. I held it to the wound.
"Hold on, Dr. Ziegler...Squeeze my hand." I put out my non-injured hand for her to hold. She squeezed tightly.
"Soldier we need you now!" I screamed at the com.
Angela began to let go of my hand.
"No Angela...Keep fighting. Squeeze my hand-"
"We are so close to saving the children. Leave me behind."
"No!!!! I am NOT leaving you here to die!" Tears ran down my face. "Why did you have to jump in front, Angela!!!" I sobbed.
"Because I l-love you..." Her hand began to let go once more.
This made me sob even more. "Please don't die! I love you too!!! You say that heroes never die! Please...You are my hero. Please..."
She began to squeeze a little harder. "I remember all the times we had at headquarters. Think about those happy thoughts Angela. We joke around when you aren't on call. Please think about those times." I rambled out of nervousness.
"The area is clear." Mei stated. "Soldier 76 will be getting guidance on our location from a few of our group members."
"Thanks Mei. Tell the rest to be on the lookout."
"Will do." She rushed off.
Mercy's wings were a tad beat up from her fall. The sight made me frown.
"I think I got the bleeding to stop."
"G-oood." Angela coughed. "I can't keep my eyes open."
"Don't lose consciousness. Soldier will be here shortly." I put my injured hand on her cheek, ignoring the pain it brought me. I was sitting on my calves. Her lightly dimmed face made me smile. She is so beautiful, even when she is hurt...
I heard the rushing footsteps of Soldier 76. He had brought some other medics too. They picked her and her stuff up. I was still holding her hand...and she didn't want to let go either.
"You reopened your hand wound. We have to take you with us-"
"But-"
"It's our policy. You must follow it like everyone else."
At least I can still be with Angela.
She showed her approval of me coming with her by clenching my hand as tight as she could.
"Okay. Mei is in charge once again! Make sure you stick together. No more bloodshed if unneeded."
"Affirmative." Voices called out to me.
"These people brought working flashlights." I called out. I had to act strong despite wanting to sob. "Good luck, soldiers."
We rushed down to the bottom.
Angela's bleeding may be stopped, but her life depends on much more than an uniform jacket.
