Mariah's POV
*
"Ion get it, Ma. Why we gotta just up and move?" I asked my mama as she dumped some more of her clothes in a box, marked with her name on it.

"Baby, listen. I can't discuss this with you right now. Please baby, just pack. I'll tell you everything you wanna know when we get to Baton Rouge." She whispered. I hear her sniffling. I closed my eyes, walking out of the room. Mama sprung the news on me this morning. We were leaving Duluth and moving to Louisiana in the morning. My brother's been looking at me sadly since she broke the news. I gotta leave my friends, my boyfriend, just because my mama going through a crisis or something. I don't know what the hell is going on, but somebody better tell me.

And soon.

My brother took me into a hug. He was taller than me, and stronger than me. This was the first time in a while that he was hugging me to make me feel better, and not plotting to body slam me or something.

It felt good.

"Man, Marcus. This shit ain't fair." Marcus chuckled at my anger.

"Betta watch it, 'fo mama hear you. But, Mariah, you'll understand when she tell you." He licked his lips, hanging his head down. I knew he had something else to say. I looked over at the boxes in the corner.

"Go talk to yo' people. Tell 'em, so y'all can hang out for the rest of the day." I gave him a weak smile, thanking him for the idea. I went in my almost empty room, picking up my phone. I FaceTime'd my boyfriend, Jaden. He picked up after what seemed like forever.

"Wassup, baby? Why yeen been answerin' my calls?"

"My mama just told me we movin' to Baton Rouge." I said flatly.

"For real?"

"Yeah."

"So whassup, then?" I smacked my lips.

"Whatchu mean?"

"You tryna break up, Shawty? 'Cause I ain't tryna be tied down to a bitch miles away from me."

"A bitch? Mane yeen gotta worry 'bout being tied down, delete my number, hoe."

"Man, Mariah--" I snatched my phone up and hung up. Bitch ass nigga. I called my best friend immediately after. She answered quick.

"What up, bih?"

"Hey, Keisha. I gotta tell you something." I broke the news to her, and she immediately came over. We cried, and laughed. She stayed overnight. In the morning, she helped me load up the U-Haul.

"Girl, imma miss you." She sobs into my shoulder. I flashed back to when we first met, all of the good times, and then graduation day, which didn't happen that long ago.

"Imma miss you more..." I respond, trying not to cry. I told her to leave before I broke down crying in front of her. Mama hopped into the U-Haul, and Marcus and I got into our car.

This about to be hell on earth.

Some time into the drive, Marcus spoke out loud.

"Ain't NBA YoungBoy from Baton Rouge?" I turned to him, nodding a little. It felt like fireworks popped off into my body and Marcus smiled, knowing I love him.

Maybe it ain't so bad.
