I've been laying in the hospital bed for what seemed like forever. Kentrell was sitting next to the bed, eyes low and red. The doctor told me I lost the baby and they don't know what caused it yet. I already know it was something I was doing carelessly.
"You got that look on ya face. Stop blamin' yaself. Day Day called while you was sleep, you wanna talk to ha?" Ken asked. I shook my head. He sat back and puffed a little. I was falling back asleep when the door clicked open without anybody knocking. I already knew it couldn't be a doctor, then. I stared as the door widened. In came Marcus and my mother. I forgot her ass existed for a minute. Marcus' eyes lit up when he saw Bri asleep in the chair beside Youngboy.
"Hey baby..." I hadn't heard her talk like that in forever. I just stared at her. I looked at Youngboy. He looked back with a sad look.
"They needed da know some ian know. Im sorry." I sighed and stared off into space in front of me.
"How far along were you?" I didn't feel like talking at all.
"She was bout two months." She sighed.
"Why you didn't tell me, Marcus had to call me and tell me a couple of weeks ago." I looked up at Marcus. He avoided eye contact with me.
"Well, baby... I jus' wanted to come up here and tell you that...it's sad that you have to go through this. I know it's sad that that baby had to die. But...everything happens for a reason. Maybe...God felt like you wouldn't be able to handle college—a job, a baby...and taking care of—" She paused and looked at Marcus.
"...Brianna." She looked back at me. I felt a tear slip down my cheek.
"Mama—don't give me that speech. Please, I jus' wanna grieve, mane." My voice cracked as I spoke. She sighed.
"I know..."
"No, you don't. Mama, this baby was my only chance at some unconditional love." Ken squeezed my hand. I was surprised say nothing stupid, hopefully he knew what I meant.
"You gon always have ya family." I closed my eyes.
Y'all some fucking snakes.
"You know what I mean, ma." I sighed. I wanted this conversation to be over with as soon as possible.
"Why Youn eva come around? Ian even know you had a lil boyfriend." She gave him a stank face, and he just gave her a dumb look.
"Cause you do shit like that."
"Watch ya mouth. Ion know what you mean."
"Man, yes you do. You be actin' boujee—like you betta than everybody."
"That don't explain why Youn come ova."
"Mama, last time I saw you I was lettin my cousins see ya. Ian speak then, you know I'm feelin' some type ah way!"
"Youn like ta communicate." I almost flew out that bed at her head.
"YOU TOLD ME—AFTER EIGHTEEN YEARS—JUST BECAUSE YOU WERE MAD AT ME, THAT SENIOR WASNT MY DADDY! ON SOME CASUAL SHIT!" The machine I was hooked up to started going crazy.
"DONT RAISE YA FUCKIN' VOICE AT ME! BE GLAD YOU KNOW YA REAL DADDY." I was about to go in on her, but there was a loud knock at the door.
"Come in." I sigh loud enough for them to hear. The doctor that came and told me the news spoke to everyone then stepped to me.
"I'm sorry, could everyone please exit the room, I need to ask Ms. Williams a couple of questions." Everybody nodded. Ken picked Brianna up and followed everybody outside.
"Now, you can be completely honest with me, you won't be in any type of trouble of course. I just wanna start off by first saying that we did find the root of your the miscarriage, and there was an extensive amount of a chemical found in medicine used for post-miscarriage cases. It seems like it entered your system but didn't kick in for a period of maybe...three days? Have you taken anything to the effect?"
"Oh, no ma'am. No no no! I wanted this baby."
"Okay, I just wanted to ask you before I say this. I do believe somebody poisoned you...maybe they mixed small amounts of the medicine in your drink...maybe the medicine was old and took more time to activate and try to regulate your body hormones...I'm not really sure. But, rest assured, we're doing our best to find out. Any questions?" I shook my head, taking in this information.
"Okay. Once again, very sorry for your loss. Thank you for your time." I nodded and gave a weak smile. Everybody rushed back in.
"What the doctor say?" Ken asked. I cocked my head to the side a little, staring off again.
"There was an extensive amount of a chemical that is found in miscarriage medicine in my system. Somebody...poisoned me. Somebody...killed my innocent child. Somebody gotta die for this shit." Ken jumped up. My eyes were mainly on the two on the right side of the bed. They were quiet.
"Somebody poisoned my fuckin' girl? Killed my fuckin' kid? Oh, fuck no." I just started laughing and shaking my head. I looked over, and they pretended to be heart broken and shit.
"Wonder what happened." I thought about how I was standing in court, sipping the water they put out. I thought about when I tasted it and drew back, but the fact that it was so hot and I was so dehydrated, I had to drink it. I looked over at Marcus, he had a tear or two rolling down my face.
"She made me do it." His voice cracked, eyes red.
"What—"
"Shut the fuck up!" Mama hissed at him.
"She made me do it, I-I got a girlfriend now, I tell you that? S-she been in the streets, but she can't go back. Mama told me she can stay wit' her, cause it's too much shit goin' on at my crib. Mama keep tellin' me to do all this stupid shit—" At this point, the tears kept coming as Mama looked like she wanted to kill him.
"Mama was in on it wit' Brianna grandma, that's really why I tried to run and move to Tennessee. She told me if ian try to take Brianna away, she was gon' call my job and get me fired. She told me if Ian poison ya baby, she was gon' sell my girlfriend back to Mike. I know I put family afta a bitch but—" He couldn't even get his words out, he was breathing so heavily.
"I jus...I'm sorry, man. I fucked up."
"Get the fuck out of my sight." I was looking at Mama, but Marcus thought I was talking to him, so he got up.
"I meant you, Mama." She mugged me and got up, knowing she was wrong. She grabbed her back and walked towards the door. I looked at Marcus, he was bouncing his leg up and down, looking at his lap. When he did look up, I saw that his eyes were bloodshot and swollen, his noise was running, and his nose was red.
"Aye." I heard Ken's voice for the first time after the outburst. He gestured at Mama. She turned around.
"Watch yo' fuckin head. I heard somebody comin' fa that shit." I looked at him, confused. She nodded and shut the door back.
"Who you heard comin' fa ba head?" I ask.
"Me."
