8. A Different Day on the Job

I watch as Mark races after the girl then I turn to one of the passing nurses and ask,"Who's she?" The nurse looks up, catching a quick glimpse of the intern, and purses his lips together and answered,"That's Lexie Grey. Her and Sloan have this thing going on or something like that."

I snicker softly then walk after the two before I call out,"Mark, can we talk real quick?" He turns and holds up a finger then he flips as he said,"Lexie, please just listen to me." The blonde snaps around and stops before she answers,"I don't think so."

"You don't even have the right to be angry. I do! You're the one who slept with Karev!" Mark exclaims, throwing up his arms. I raise an eyebrow then ask,"Wait, I'm sorry, who slept with my ex turned baby daddy?"

She scoffs and comes to a quick stop then snaps,"Would you just butt out?" I lick my lips briefly and lean in close before I state,"I could, but I figured you would like to know that I'm his ex girlfriend and that he was yelling at me for screwing over his intern so there's some confirming on that. Trust me, you can have all-" I motion towards Mark then finish,"-of that. " She turns to my ex who nods in agreement then I say,"I just need him to tell me where said intern is so I can fix him.  "

Mark points the general direction of the Pit then informs me and states,"I stuck him with Brigitte in the Pit. They were both being pissy so I put them together in hopes that they would get over their drama." I nod in acknowledgement and begin my journey to find Jackson. I enter the Pit and dodge an incoming gurney with a young child on it before I hold up my hands and grumble softly as my pager goes off then I sigh before one of the EMTs shouts,"Dr. Parker, we could use your help right about now."

"Coming!" I call, turning on my heel to find that Jackson is behind me. I freeze and grab him by the lapels of his coat then shout,"Hey, Skippy, what are you doing right about now?" The very same intern that stopped me earlier in the week turns and answers that she was finishing sutures then I wave her over and say,"Not anymore, let's go." She stands and heads over to me then I inform Jackson,"We are going to talk and you're not going to ignore me anymore. But I can't talk now because I have a patient."

He opens his mouth to respond but I sprint back to where the paramedic is waiting for me, a chart stretched out in his hand. I take it and give it a once over. Kid's name is Link Turner, age five. Dammit, I hate when the patients are really young.

I give Link a glance over and I realize that his eyes are now glazed over. I unravel my stethoscope from around my neck then cup my hand around it,blowing hot air onto it to warm the metal. I press it to his chest and he takes in a breath that shakes and trembles.

I shoot the EMT a nervous glance then ask,"Where's the parents?" He shoots me a nervous glance then grabs my arm gently before he states,"Trust me, it's better that she's not here. Whew."

I stare at him for a moment but turn back to the child who is now struggling against Skippy's hold, whimpering. His eyes water and shake his head rapidly, as he pushes at the cuff around his arm.

"Move real quick, Skippy." I say, pushing her off the bed, then settle beside him. I wave a brief hand in front of his face, catching his attention from the blood pressure cuff, then sign to him,"Hi, I'm Aviana and I'm here to help you."

Suddenly, his face lights up and I realize that my hunch was right. The little boy was hard of hearing. He waves in excitement then replied,"I'm Link. Do you know where my momma is?" I turn towards the EMT that brought him in then ask,"Seriously, where is his mom?"

"Piss drunk and passed out on the porch. The neighbor saw him fall off the steps and rushed to help him. When she realized that he wasn't breathing, she called us and now, here we are. I'm not even sure if the mom knows that he's here." he answers, shooting a nervous look to the child beside me.
