"Children see magic because they look for it." ~Christopher Moore
I pick Ashton up from school at three. "Auntie Ellie," Ash squeals as she gives me a massive hug.
"Hey, Ash," I say with grin. "Are you ready for the most awesome weekend of your life?" I ask.
"Yes!" She replies with excitement in her voice. "Are we going to watch The Little Mermaid?"
"Of course!" I really, really, really, don't want to watch the movie but I know that it is Ash's favorite and I want to make her happy.
"Yay!" She squeals. "What are we going to have for dinner?"
"What do you want?" I ask.
"Pizza!" She replies. "Please Auntie Ellie, can we please have pizza?!"
"You are lucky that pizza is one of my favorite foods. What kind of pizza should we get?"
"Half of it should be cheese and the other half should be pineapple!"
"Pineapple?" I question as we walk to the car. I am borrowing Tatiana's car this weekend while mine gets repaired.
"Yep!"
"Do you like pineapple?" I ask because I have never met a child you eats pineapple pizza. I don't even eat it!
"I love pineapple!"
"Then we will get cheese and pineapple pizza," I say.
"Yippee!"
We drive back to my apartment. Ash grabs her Little Mermaid backpack and I grab her duffel bag that Tatiana packed full of Ash's clothes, some toys, a couple of books, and of course, The Little Mermaid.
I put the duffel bag in the spare bedroom and Ash puts her backpack in there too.
"Whenever Mommy, Daddy, and I have pizza we sometimes invite someone over to have it with us," Ash mentions as we walk into the living area. "Can we invite someone to have pizza with us tonight?" She asks.
"Who should we invite?" I ask her.
"Hmmm.....can we invite Logan?" She asks.
"Why do you want to invite him?" I ask with genuine curiosity.
"Because he likes The Little Mermaid too," she replies.
"Okay," I reply laughing a little.
I let Ash watch cartoons on the TV while I send in an order of pizza to be delivered at 6:30. I sit at the dining room table as I call Logan to invite him over.
"What's up, Ellie?" He asks as soon as he answer his cell phone.
"Well, Ash was wondering if you wanted to have pizza with us tonight and watch The Little Mermaid," I reply.
"Well, The Little Mermaid is my all time favorite movie," he says with a hint of sarcasm.
"Same," I reply. "I don't understand why some people don't like it."
"I know. They must be crazy," he says. "But to answer Ash's question, I would love to join you guys tonight."
"Okay!" I reply with a hint of excitement.
After we hang up, I head into the living room and sit beside Ash on the couch. "Is he coming?" She asks with hope.
"Yes," I reply with a smile.
"Tonight is going to be so much fun!" She squeals with delight.
Logan arrives at around six and Ash gives him a massive hug. "I have missed you so much!" She screams.
"I've missed you too," he replies. "I brought you something."
"What?" She asks, practically jumping up and down.
"Ice cream," he replies.
"YES!" She screams at the top of her lungs. "I love ice cream!"
"My ears," I complain as they ring.
"I didn't even think that level of pitch was possible," Logan says with shock.
"What kind did you get?" Ash asks, eyeing the grocery bag.
"Chocolate," he replies.
"YES!!!! HOW DID YOU KNOW CHOCOLATE IS MY FAVORITE FLAVOR?! I LOVE CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM!" She screams even louder than before.
"I don't think I can hear," I say with just a hint of sarcasm.
"Ash? I think you should be an opera singer," Logan says to her.
"What is an opera singer?" She asks.
"I will show you a video of an opera singer."
Halfway through dinner, Ash declares, "I think you guys should get married."
Logan proceeds to choke on his pizza and I sit there with my jaw dropped.
"Why?" I ask.
"Because," she replies like that is the answer for everything. "You guys are perfect for each other."
"Okay," Logan says.
"It could be like a fairytale. You can be the prince and Auntie Ellie can be the princess and you guys can live happily ever after."
"I wish it was that simple," Logan replies.
Ash watches more cartoons while Logan and I clean up after dinner.
"Ellie?" Logan asks as he puts the dirty plates in the dishwasher.
"Yeah?"
"There is something else I didn't tell you from the other night," he admits.
"I probably shouldn't know since I was drunk and obviously said stupid stuff," I reply.
"Then I won't tell you the things that were said," he says. "But one of the conversations, our last conversation, was real."
"Real?"
"Everything we said to each other was true," he says. "At least from my side."
I can hear the rain pound on the ground outside and matches how I feel on the inside. I fear that I already know what he is going to say.
"I love you," he says.
