The Sorting Hat

Soon the Hogwarts Express came to a halt and students began piling out of the doors. A woman stood at the platform. Her hair was pulled into a tight ponytail and she was cloaked in dark blue robes. Her triangular glasses were perched precariously on the tip of her nose as she peered over the students. She gathered the first-years while the rest were taken away by another teacher. Cora saw Rory laughing with his friends. He was wearing his robes and had a green tie on. Slytherin, Cora thought.

" May I have your attention please! My name is Professor Aeres and i'm the Deputy Headmistress." the teacher announced. Soon they began walking towards a  giant lake. They were told to get into tiny wooden boats. With a swift "Forward!" from Professor Aeres, the boats began to move across the murky black water. Cora could have sworn she saw tentacles emerging from the water a if trying to grab the boats. They soon arrived to a rocky path and by then, Cora's socks were soaked and she walked strangely. Aerana and Danielle were beside her, Aerana complaining about her robes being wet while Danielle was trying to wring her skirt. Professor Aeres, however, looked just as she did before. Not a single speck on dirt was on her and nor was she wet. They soon approached the castle and the Professor took out her wand.

" Alohomora.". The doors swung open and Cora's jaws dropped. This was the first time she had ever witnessed magic and was already thrilled. They were ushered inside and taken through another pair of doors.

" Welcome to," Professor Aeres pushed the doors, " the Great Hall!". No one had ever imagined such a spectacular place. The hall was lit by thousands of floating candles and instead of a roof, there was the brilliant night sky, millions of stars twinkling in it. Cora heard a girl behind her say that the roof was just bewitched to look like the night sky. On four long benches, sat students, their eyes on the first-years. Soon Professor Aeres appeared again and was carrying a stool. She then placed an old, worn and frayed hat on the stool. Suddenly, the hat sprung to life and begun singing a song about itself and the four houses.

" It is now time for the sorting!" Announced the hat. Professor Aeres began reading the names of the list.

" Justin Clayton!". A boy with dark brown hair approached forward and the hat was placed on his head. It then bellowed " Hufflepuff!" and cheering could be heard from the house. This went on for all the students.

" Thespina Fluxwell!"

" Slytherin!"

" Danielle Felitor!"

" Hufflepuff!". Aerana and Cora cheered loudly along with the Hufflepuff table. Aerana was muttering " I knew it!" to herself.

" Aerana  Séraphine!"

" Ravenclaw!". Cora cheered as Aerana walked proudly to the table. After a few more students, it was finally Cora's turn. She approached the hat and it was placed on her, however unlike the others, the hat took a long time to decide. She could hear it muttering "Muggleborn" and "Merlin was". All eyes were on Cora and after what seemed like eternity, the hat announced.

" SLYTHERIN!". Cora was stumped and nearly fell off her stool. She heard loud gasps which she assumed were from Aerana, Rory and Danielle. Even Professor Aeres looked astonished. There was no cheering from the Slytherin table, in fact, the hall was silent. Cora got off the stool and began walking sheepishly towards the Slytherin table. She could feel the house's eyes on her as she sat down.

" Stop staring at me!" She hissed to those near her, which included Rory. Soon the Sorting was over and The Headmaster stood up. He had a long white beard which reached all the way to his knees. He wore grey and blue robes which had constellation patterns on them.

" Congratulations new students on being sorted. Welcome to Hogwarts! I won't keep you waiting too long for the feast so I will say a few words Nitwit, Blubber, Oddment, Tweak! Let the feast begin." Headmaster Abigeor announced. Immediately, platters of food appeared on the table. The spread was so marvelous that Cora almost forgot about what had happened. However as she ate, a part of her couldn't help but think, why a Muggleborn like her was sorted into Slytherin.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I know that muggleborns don't get put into Slytherin so please don't hate me for writing that. I have made a perfect reason why Cora was sorted into the house and it will happen later.

Yes okay bye. -A
