" Cora! Cora will you-OUCH-CORA!" Rory's voice echoed through the corridors. Cora however ignored his pleas and cries to just talk to him, and walked at the back of the first-year Slytherins. She soon lost Rory and entered a completely different corridor. She kept her head down and pretended she couldn't see the occasional gazes of the other students. Pretended that she couldn't hear them whispering among themselves. But as hard as she tried, she couldn't get the Sorting Hat's voice out of her head. She couldn't stop thinking about Aerana and Danielle's words. Muggle-borns won't get into Slytherin they said. You don't have to worry about anything they said. WELL THEN WHY THE BLOODY HELL AM I-
" Excuse me?" A tiny voice spoke, interrupting Cora's thoughts. She looked behind her and saw a small girl with dark brown hair and messy robes. Cora raised her eyebrow and nodded in response and the girl wobbled forward. Around her neck, there was a twine with a small whistle on it. She quickly tucked it inside her robes.
" I know you must be feeling awful at this moment. I bet my parents will be beyond disappointed to know i'm in Slytherin. I come from a long line of Gryffindors you see." she explained.
" Your point?" asked Cora. The girl simply shrugged.
" I want to be your friend. You and I both know that you're not going to be very popular here so to prevent making your life a living hell..." She stuck out her hand for Cora to shake, " Friends?". Cora raised one eyebrow. She was surprised but suspicious at the same time. Did this girl really want to be her friend or was she trying to trick her? Nevertheless she shook her nimble hands and introduced herself.
" My name's Avalyn Evlore.". At this moment, Raymond Mallor, the prefect, yelled at them to hurry up. Avalyn and Cora quickly stumbled forward until they reached a brick wall. There were no other ways to go and the others were nowhere to be seen.
" Maybe it's like the platform, we have to run through the wall." suggested Avalyn .
" Yeah i'm not doing that. Be my guest though." Cora replied. Avalyn threw her hands up in the air and braced herself to run.
" Unless you want to end up in the hospital wing, I wouldn't do that if I were you." A voice spoke causing Cora to jump and Avalyn to nearly crash into the wall. Then, a boy came out from behind a pillar. He had dark brown hair, and greenish-grey eyes.
" My name's Alexard Azrune Oclubeus, second-year. The password's amaranthine by the way.". Cora muttered a ' thanks' and loudly said the password. Nothing happened for a while then suddenly, the bricks started moving away from the wall and revealed a passage. Cora, Avalyn, and Alexard walked all the way down the path until they saw a warm fire sputtering in the distance. They had reached the common room.
All around, metal lamps hung from chains, all containing green fire. Carved chairs lay around the room, occupied by students reading or talking. Above the intricately carved mantelpiece, hung a shield with the emblematic snake embossed on it. The eye of the snake contained a large emerald which glinted in the light. Out of the window, Cora saw water. They were under the lake. On the wall, hung a portrait of a man she had never seen.
The first-years were given time to explore the common room. Cora and Avalyn went together, surprised by how many twists and turns the room had. They reached a curtain which reached all the way to the ceiling and pushed it aside. Much to their wonder, the room they entered had walls made of glass and floor made of smooth cold marble. They were able to see the entire lake and the creatures in it. In the distance, Avalyn made out the giant squid. Upon closer inspection of the walls, they realised there was no glass. The water was held back by some kind of clear shield. Light caused reflections of the water to dance about the room, engulfing them in tranquility.
They left the room and entered another one filled with bookshelves. Cora completely lost it and began touching and feeling every book. They all gave off a cheerful vibe but when her hand brushed across an old dusty grey book, darkness seemed to circle around it. She beckoned Avalyn over and she looked at the book. They could just make out words like death and battle. Avalyn reached out and gently grabbed the spine of the book. She was just about to take it out when Raymond Mallor called all the first-years to gather. She let go of the book, her fingertips covered in dusty. She wiped them on her robes and they went over to the group of first-years. Raymond directed them to their dorms. Cora was in the same dorm as Avalyn along with two other girls who looked disparagingly in her direction. She ignored them and began looking at all her items that had been brought up. She fell onto the bed and pulled all the curtains around her. First thing in the morning, she would go get that strange book and try to find Danielle and Aerana.
