Dean was done playing games with her. He'd decided this almost immediately after the disappointment of his team losing the biggest game of their season. He sat in the VIP lounge of the club one of the other player's had booked for their end of the season party, and as he scrolled through Instagram, his phone dinged with a message.

From: Bestie <3

Heard about the loss, but im sure yall will pull thru next season

As he read the message a smile grew on his face. The bubble popped up that showed she was typing something else, but he quickly typed a message of his own.

Love you so much zo

More typing, a pause, more typing, and then a message came through.

Love you too starboy

"Starboy" was the nickname she'd taken to using with him since he was drafted.

He smiled and sighed at the same time, coming to grips with the fact that at that very moment, all he wanted to do was see her.

Before off season training began he would have some free time, which was normally reserved for chilling with the fam. Since he'd made no promises to them he didn't feel bad about mentally renaming family time Zoe time. It was now or never and his mom would understand. She would most likely even rejoice.

Dean just hoped that Zoe would believe him when he said he was finally ready to be serious.

He could admit that selfishly he'd taken more from her than he should have throughout the 10 years of their "friendship." They were best friends and in some ways more intimate than lovers.

"Bro, you're being THE wet rag of the party," one of his teammates came and plopped down next to Dean as he had just begun to scroll through Zoe's Instagram.

Dean looked around at the VIP area they were seated in, taking in the flashing lights, the leathers seats, and the endless supply of drinks.

"Piss off, bro," he replied nonchalantly. He could tell Mike was too drunk to care.

Mike laughed, taking a few more sips of his drink. "You don't have to sit around and mope just 'cause we lost, bro. Look around, this life, bro, we've got it all," he said, his words slurring a little.

In his completely sober state, Dean easily ignored him.

Zoe's most recent photo was one of her smiling up at the sky, all decked out in a pleated midi skirt and a crop top.

"Who's that? She's cute man, not like baad, but she's cute," Mike commented offhandedly.

Dean promptly rose, resisting the urge to eject Mike from the seat he had taken over. He made his rounds in the room, informing his teammates that he was heading out early. Some were perplexed but most were too tipsy to care.

Dean didn't care either way. He had a lot to think about.

Zoe had never verbally asked for more than a friendship, but he knew from the times he hadn't been able to stop himself from kissing her that she felt at least a little bit more for him than she let on.

The little bit part might be a problem.

Because he sure as hell felt a whole lot for her.
