After dinner, Dee took Zoe out for frozen yogurt.
As soon as they walked in people turned and stared, immediately recognizing him. Apparently his fan base doesn't frequent Red Lobster?
Dean took pictures with a few children and some older couples while Zoe sat on the side and held their yogurts. He laughed and smiled easily. She could tell he was comfortable with the attention he received. Couldn't be me, she thought. After about ten minutes passed he waved goodbye to his fans and ushered her to the door. He heaved a relaxed sigh once they had settled into the car.
"Superstar life," Zoe commented, handing him his yogurt. "Something like that," Dean replied offhandedly, smiling over at her
For a while, they just sat enjoying their desserts. Dean turned on the radio and bopped his head to kehlani's "Honey."
"All the pretty girls in the world but I'm in this space with youuuuu," he sang, using his spoon as a microphone. He reached for Zoe's hand dramatically and she just looked at him, biting back a smile. "Youse a goof for real," she said, shaking her head.
When that song ended Dean turned off the radio and returned to one of his favorite hobbies, watching Zoe. She was texting someone on her lap. To his surprise, when he leaned over to playfully peek at her screen she actually pulled her phone away. And she didn't even look up at him as she did this. He furrowed his eyebrows and just tried to chill, considering the fact that he could easily reach over and snatch the phone from her hands. He continued to eat his yogurt with comically insecure thoughts running through his head. Is she cheating on me? I feel like I'm the only one trying. She's usually so comfortable with me. What did I-
Zoe slipped her phone into her pocket and reached for her yogurt again, still avoiding Dean's intense stare. After a few moments, she broke the silence.
"I had to make an excuse to Trey about why I canceled our date."
"Y'all had a date tonight?" Dean questioned in feigned causality, folding his arms.
"Yes...we were supposed to go to the movies," she replied. She would have left it at that but he was visibly (and irrationally) annoyed. "But you showed up...and so I'm here with you and I'm glad because I'd rather be with you. Trey was a little...intense."
He turned to look at her with a hard, yet inquisitive stare. "Then why'd he get more than one date?"
Regardless of whether or not he was truly entitled to ask her that question, Dean had to know if Zoe was in anything deep.
Zoe pondered for a few minutes over a response that wouldn't offend him, until she decided it was pointless. "Because he's a good man, De. He's a leader, he's spiritually mature, he's a gentleman, do you want me to go on?" she responded honestly.
Dean was visibly a little shook. "Damn, " he muttered, rubbing his beard thoughtfully. Zoe quickly reached across the console for his hand, sliding her fingers through his much larger ones.
"And what am I?" Dean questioned slowly before she could think of what to say to make him feel better.
She groaned even though she knew that would be his response. Dean was always so comfortable sharing his own feelings and he challenged her to do the same. Her face burned as she pondered his question, looking down at their interlocked hands. He was staring her dead in the face too.
" You're thoughtful, straightforward, handsome, protective, and you bring out the best in me," Zoe said finally. She didn't have to look up at him to know a slow grin had formed on his face. She was glad she couldn't visibly blush. Dean pulled her into him by her waist and tilted her chin up to look at him.
"You gotta let me kiss you now, Zo," he said, his lips already only a whisper away. He wouldn't have asked but he'd already pushed her quite a bit today. She turned her head away for a second and pretended to think.
Dean rolled his eyes but waited.
"I'll allow it," she finally said, looking back at him with feigned nonchalance.
"Girl," he scoffed, placing his hand on the back of her neck and moving his mouth toward hers. She smiled into their kiss.
