"He was beaten to death by a gang. He was going out to buy....to buy me a Tiffany Necklace." She breaks down crying, but all I can really do is stare. I don't know how to feel bad about someone I don't remember. "They dragged his body up to our doorstep with a videotape of what happened. You're the one that found it. He died nine months ago." She finished, taking my hand. I smile at her, and hug her. I gasp as I remember something, my eyes glazing over.
I'm about nine years old, at my school talent show. I am about to do a gymnastics balance beam act on stage, but I'm crying. My mom comes out and takes my little hands. "You are a brave and strong little girl. You can do anything. Get up there, and show them who's the boss." She gives me a warm smile and hugs me.
A burst of emotion comes from my heart, and I gasp. I fall back onto my bed, my mothers eyes full of worry. "The last time you hugged me like that was at my talent show. I was doing a routine on the balance beam." I say, a single tear making it's was down my marked up face. "I remembered." Is all I say before the nurse I threw my crutches at barges in. "You both need to come with me." She glares at me, her eyes slicing through my soul like a cold steel blade. She returns to her professional self as she wheels in a wheelchair. I sit down in it as she pushes me in a hurry out the door. We enter the viewing area of the surgery room, only glass separating us. I see who they are operating on, and something about him seems familiar. "It's your boyfriend, Logan. He was in the accident." My mom says, her voice just started below a whisper. Something about knowing he's my boyfriend makes me upset to see him like this. It feels as if someone brought a hammer to my heart. My entire body freezes and I seem to forget how to breath, when he flatlines.
