CHAPTER FIVE
James, Gilligan, and I walk upstairs to the paramedic intern locker room.
We walk in and I remember about my purse and grab it from the floor. I notice all the lockers are not named except for mine and my fellow interns.
"I really expected more than three interns," I say, stuffing my purse into my assigned locker.
"Not a lot of interns get into this hospital - especially for a paramedic position," says James who's downing a water bottle at rapid speed.
I want to say - Well, how'd you get in? - but I decide against it, not wanting to make enemies just yet.
Gilligan on the other hand, doesn't have a problem with making enemies too soon.
"Who do you think you are, bossing me around like that?" She spits, tilting her head at me.
"What? What happened with the gurney earlier?" I ask, raising my eyebrows,"you could've killed the guy,"
"Bullshit!" She shrieks and the door suddenly opens.
We all become stiff at the sight of Kingston.
"What the hell is going on?" He asks as he walks in, letting the door slam behind him.
Gilligan is suddenly quiet and I snort.
"Something funny, Robins?" Kingston says slowly, his voice deep and rasped.
I straighten,"Well, Gilligan here believes I was too bossy earlier,"
Gilligan coughs and moves a strand of hair from her face. James is already twiddling his thumbs in the corner.
Seriously, how'd he get in here?
"It's the first day, guys," Kingston starts, rubbing his fingers roughly against his forehead in annoyance,"and you've already started to act like children,"
Ouch.
"I'm older than her!" Gilligan blurts,"I bet I've studied harder than her. Plus, she was late! Who's really the child here?" Gilligan crosses her arms looking satisfied with herself while Kingston looks utterly stressed.
"Gilligan, get your act together or you will never see the back of an ambulance again,"Kingston practically growls at her and leaves the room, leaving us all stunned.
After all that is over, I realized that Kingston never really insulted me directly.
He probably knows I'm a better paramedic than Gilligan already.
Gilligan slumps down on the benches in the middle of the locker room and I don't say anything to her.
James seemed to have calmed down as he took out his phone and started texting.
I felt useless, sitting in a room with an intern who already hates me and another one who is just not right for the job.
