CHAPTER FOUR

Doctor Carr and I rush outside through the ambulance, Doctor Carr putting on the gloves and body sheet as I anxiously wait for the ambulance to come rushing.

"What do you specialize in?" I ask her as she ties her body sheet.

"I'm a neurosurgeon," she responds and suddenly, we hear the siren.

The sirens inch closer and closer and with it, my palms become sweaty and my mouth becomes dry.

The ambulance turns the corner at a high speed. Doctor Carr and me suddenly become completely serious.

My nerves are gone and all I feel rushing through my veins is adrenaline.

I don't care about being late or that my intern chief will be raging mad when he realizes I was the one who was not there on time.

I don't care that I will always be remembered as the paramedic intern who didn't go on the very first on call scene.

I only care about these two traumas coming in; I'm in full focus mode.

The ambulance stops abruptly and the back doors opening quicker than lightning. Two intern paramedics, their wide eyes give them away, jump out first and take the gurney out with them.

The wheels of the gurney practically slam onto the concrete, allowing the gurney and the patient to jump.

"Don't you know what you're doing?!" I blurt, watching the two interns face me, their faces white. They're terrified.

I rush over and check the patient first. His eyes are closed and he's not breathing on his own.

"You," I point at one of the paramedic interns,"keep the ventilator on his mouth, you just shifted it the way you took him out of the ambulance,"

"Who are you?" she asks, but does as I say.

"I'm the late intern," I say, checking the IV's that they had places along his arm to make sure they hadn't shifted as well.

Doctor Carr, I see in the corner of my eye, takes out her flashlight and opens the patients eye one at a time, checking his brain trauma.

"What are his stats?" Carr asks and the interns look confused.

They don't respond,"Where are his stats?" I repeat Carr's question.

Carr and I look at each other, baffled.

"I have them, Carr," a paramedic jumps out from the ambulance.

I'm guessing he's the paramedic chief.

"I believe you took the wrong interns with you, Kingston," Carr says and glances my way,"this one here was a minute late and she knows how to take a patient out of an ambulance,"

Kingston looks at me, his face showing no emotion. He hands Carr the stats and other doctors come out and help her get him inside to continue procedure.

"You were late?" he asks, crossing his arms. This makes his posture look even more masculine and intimidating than before.

    I cough, clearing my throat.

"Technically-" I start, but I'm interrupted.

"Time is not a reliable source here, Robins," Kingston says, raising an eyebrow,"if I say nine thirty, it means nine."

I furrow my eyebrows, but I don't argue with my chief.

    "Yes," I nod,"I'm sorry. Won't happen again,"

Kingston keeps his gaze on me and the silence is killer. The two other interns are just staring into space while Kingston and I have a stare off.

"Get in an ambulance, heading to a scene, what's the first thing you do?" he blurts to all of us.

"Plug in the directions," intern Gilligan, the one I had told to hold the ventilator, speaks.

Kingstons eyebrows go up. We both know that's wrong.

"No, you turn on the sirens first,"I say, looking at her instead of Kingston. His stare alone makes me forget everything I've learned.

"How old are you?" Kingston asks, suddenly.

I don't know who's he's talking too and only when he says my name is when I shoot my eyes to his. I don't want to answer. I've learned that the youngest in the career are always bait to be the most taken advantage of.

    "Robins?"

"Twenty-six," I mutter, knowing I'm probably the youngest intern out of us three.

I hear a small gasp escape from Gilligan and I know she's in utter shock. Kingston is surprised as well, but he doesn't show it.

They both don't look so old themselves.

Gilligan looks about 28 and Kingston - at least 29.

The other intern with us is not saying anything. I'd almost forgotten he was here. I glance over and his face is too pale. His chest is barely moving. I look down at his legs and he has them locked.

"He's going to faint," I state, pointing at my fellow intern.

Kingston looks at him and then at me,"Robins, what the hell-"

A thump cuts him off and we all look.

The intern who's name I still had not learned was on the ground unconscious.

We all rush to him, Gilligan setting his head on her lap.

"What did you guys see out there?" I ask, Kingston next to me and Gilligan helping the intern wake up.

Kingston doesn't answer me and I believe that he's taken away all my rights to talk to him.

"Car crash," he finally says and I look at him,"truck versus sedan. Head on."

I snap my head forward and lock my jaw. I can't close my eyes or I'll be taken back to that exact moment in time.

I knew this job wouldn't give me the glory of forgetting my accident; I'm going to have to work twice as hard every - damn - day to not let it affect me.

I notice Kingston's stare on me and I shift in my spot, uncomfortable.

I'm not going to lie, he's a handsome guy. But he's a hell of a good intimidator.

His body is fit, with the little spare time he has away from the hospital, I can tell he works out. His shirt hugs his muscles in all the right places. He's taller than me - way taller. I'm a good five seven, he seems a six four.

His short, curly black hair seems smoother than my own. His blue eyes are hard to stare into for a long time before getting absolutely lost in them.

I learned this in the three minutes I'd met him.

Gilligan finally gets intern white face awake and helps him up. I quickly look at his shirt - James.

"Let's head in guys. We're ambulance seven. Any calls for us go through intercom so stay alert," Kingston looks at me when he says the last part and he goes inside.

I patiently wait for Gilligan and James to go inside.

I know that after my lateness today, I'm going to have to redeem myself next time. Everyday, I think, everyday I will have to show what I'm capable of.

Thanks for reading! Hope you're enjoying! So.....Kingston is finally introduced! How do you like him and the other interns?? Comment, like, and vote.
