Chapter 3
After she finished packing all the essentials like food, water, and blankets into her fathers rickety old truck she filled the trucks tank with gas and put the other bottles of gas in the back seat. She knew she wouldnt have enough has to get the whole way but she was confident she could get a little more than half way to the coast with the amount of gas she had. She took a deep breath while waiting for the truck to warm up then set off on her way. It was about ten in the morning when she left her house. After around seven hours of driving she knew she needed to stop for the night, it was getting dark even though it was only around six thirty and her whole body was stiff with tiredness. She squinted, looking into the distance and spotted what looked like a small abandoned town. Deciding that this would probably be her best option she pulled out of the main road and took a smaller dirt path down toward the town.
(JOSHUA POV)
Josh stretched his body out, he had taken a nap after walking to the small abandoned town. At first he had been cautious about stopping there but after checking the place out he found a few bottles of water and a few cans of food and had also found that this town had long since been abandoned, it seemed as if the people had left in a hurry, there was clothing strewn across the floor, money still in cash registers and he had even found half eaten plates of food in most of the houses. After finding a small house that seemed the sturdiest and most secure he had settled there and decided he would sleep there that night. After putting his boots back on he fed his dog, a small black doberman puppy that he had taken with him when he had found him in a small cardboard box in an old town. While he was watching Lucy (his puppy) eat he was startled when he heard a strange sound, a sound he hadnt heard in months, the scratching sound of gravel crunching under tires. He ran to the window and looked out seeing a black truck enter through the towns small main street. It came to a stop in front of the general store and he saw a girl that looked around his age, maybe a year younger climb out of the car. She was beautiful. She had raven black hair tucked into her shirt and bright green eyes, he could tell she was petite even under the huge sweater she wore, he saw her shivering as she jogged into the store and watched her dissapointed face as she headed back out. She didnt seem very dangerous so he tugged on his jacket and headed outside.
"Hey!" He called to get her attention.
She turned toward him a terrified expression on her face. "Hey" She said cauitiously.
"Umm, im Joshua" I said not knowing what to say to this beautiful girl.
"Im Alice, i didnt think there was any survivors left in this part of the country." She gave me a shy smile and walked forward towards me untill she was only a few feet away.
"Yeah i didnt think so either. Where are you headed?"
"Im heading to the coast, California, iv heard people are trying to start a community over there." I wasnt surprised she was heading to the same place i was.
"Yeah im headed over there myself" I pushed my hands into my pockets. "Are you hungry? I was just about to eat some dinner."
"Uhh, yeah i guess i am, i havnt eaten since i left early this morning." She then decided to move her truck to a more conspicous area behind the house just in case. Then followed me into the house to have dinner.
