brendon was frozen in place - well, about as frozen as he could be - as tyler painted his back. "what are you even painting?" he asked, only to get shushed by his smaller friend.

"you'll see when i'm done." tyler reached over to his paint pots and dipped his brush in the green paint as brendon started to ramble about life. even though most people were annoyed by brendon's rambling, it was relaxing to tyler. it made him feel more comfortable knowing that brendon wanted to talk to him. and it was even better because tyler didn't have to talk that much. brendon did most of the talking for him.

"...but anyway," brendon babbled, messing with his fingernails, "there's a new boy arriving at the orphanage today."

"oh really?"

"yeah! he's pretty cute. i was talking to mr. weekes in his office and i saw the file on his desk. i asked him about it and he told me that the guy's name is joshua and he's seventeen just like us." the hyper boy grinned a little at the idea of a new friend.

"you saw a picture?"

"mhm. i even managed to grab it when weekes wasn't looking." a devilish smirk crossed brendon's face as he fumbled to get the picture out of his pocket.

tyler was knocked off of his seat on brendon's thighs as his friend moved and the paintbrush slipped from his fingers, landing in his hair. "brendon!" he screeched, yanking the brush off of his freshly painted green strands. "i just washed my hair!"

he was too busy fuming to notice the picture thrust at him. brendon rolled his eyes and snapped in his friend's face to bring him back to reality. tyler sighed and muttered to himself as he looked at the picture.

his jaw dropped.

"that's him?"

"yeah, dude! isn't he hot? weekes told me he'd be moving in today but into a different sleeping quarters. it's such a shame all the hunks go into different sleeping quarters. i wouldn't mind sharing a bed with him."

"BRENDON!"

the first thing joshua dun thought when he stepped into the orphanage was, this place smells bad. he wasn't wrong, either. decades of blood, sweat, and other bodily fluids were imprinted into the floors and walls. but nobody could really help that. the place was built in 1933, for christ's sake. it wasn't going to be new and fancy.

joshua's caretaker, miss nicks, smiled at the boy and ran a hand through his chocolate curls. "you're gonna do just fine here, hon. i'll come and visit as often as i can," she assured him and herself, but joshua knew that wasn't entirely true.

miss nicks had taken care of him for most of his life, but they had to make the hard decision to put him up for adoption once he turned seventeen. she was getting old and frankly she didn't know how much longer she would be able to help.

joshua sniffled and looked down, not wanting his godmother to see him cry. miss nicks pulled him into a hug, holding back tears as well. "don't worry, sugar. i brought you a little something to remember me by."

she pulled away and, with a grin, pulled an old battered bunny rabbit out of her bag. joshua's eyes immediately lit up. "rhiannon?" he whispered, taking the rabbit into his arms.

"you bet. i dug her up the other day while going through your old baby clothes. she's still holding up pretty well!" miss nicks looked over her shoulder at the headmistress, who was obviously getting impatient. "alright, joshua, i think i gotta go now."

joshua just nodded, leaning against miss nicks. "i'll miss you."

miss nicks pressed a kiss to the top of joshua's head and ruffled his curls. "i'll miss you too, little guy."
