Rain trickled down the long windows, as if describing Thana's current mood. Outside, the sky was a dark grey mass and she could hear short bursts of thunder which made her feel anxious. She knew that she should be happy like Albus and Scorpius but however much she tried to remove herself from her window gazing to join the menial conversation; she couldn't.
"Anything from the trolley dears?" She heard the old woman ask. She turned her head and quickly replied "No, thank you.". Scorpius on the other hand, very enthusiastic about the notion of sugary treats, decided to purchase practically everything from the trolley.
Thana though, had no appetite. The butterflies in her stomach jumping around like they had just had to find an escape. Her brother looked at the nervous look on her face and a look of worry instantly replaced the happy expression from just moments earlier.
"Are you alright Thana? It's not like you to be this quiet." Scorpius quiered, concerned. It took her a while before she decided lying wouldn't get her anywhere. "I'm just nervous about the sorting ceremony and how the other students will react to us. I heard all the whispers on the platform. Its like we're animals in a zoo!" She said glumly.
Albus gave her a sympathetic look and reasurred her," It doesn't matter what they think. I'm worried about not being in griffindor but I don't think dwelling on it will make you feel better."
"Yeh. I agree with Albus. Try to not think about it anymore. Shall we play a game?" Scorpius imputed then reached into his bag and pulled out a pack of cards.
"Sure." Thana replied glad for the distraction.Minutes fell into hours and before long, they had arrived at Hogwarts. Thana jaw dropped as she gazed at the utterly indescribable castle. It was everything she dreamed it would be and more. "First years this way!" Bellowed a very tall man with a bushy beard. This must've been Hagrid. He smiled with kind eyes at the trio as they stopped in front him.
"Hello you three. Blimey haven't you grown. I felt like it were just yesterday since you were all babies!"
Albus burst into a grin," My father told me to tell you that you are missed." Muttering the next part, " and to make sure I don't get into any trouble." Hagrid seemed to have heard him though. He chuckled,
"He can talk. Oh the stories I could tell yer about your dad. He got into enough mischief here to last him a lifetime."Thana and Scorpius started to laugh but Albus just smiled politely. Looking down at his watch, Hagrid gave an alarmed look." Right firs' years follow me to the boats." He shouted loud enough for everyone to hear him.
They were herded through the front gates to be met by a stern looking witch. Thana looked around, anxiously seeking an exit. " Welcome to Hogwarts. I am your headmistress Minerva McGonagall. The sorting ceremony will commence shortly through the hall. I will call you out one at a time to be sorted into your houses. The houses are Griffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin." Their new headmistress informed them. She then looked around, clapped her hands and after a second the doors started to open.
It opened to reveal a cacophony of sounds and a mesmerizingly beautiful grand hall. They were led to the front of the hall all the while their eyes darting all over the place, trying to take it all in. James gave Albus a cheerful grin and Albus smiled back.
McGonagall stood at the front, raising a glass and tapping it gently to command attention. Eventually, everyone went silent and the ceremony began.
On a stool in the middle of the stage where McGonagall stood, the sorting hat was placed. It didn't look like anything special just a brown, tattered, long hat. Then suddenly it sprung to life. It sang a cheerful tune about the four houses. The brave at heart Griffindors, the just and loyal Hufflepuffs, the wise and ready of learning Ravenclaws and the cunning Slytherin. She didn't really care which house she was put in. What did it matter?
The headmistress then began to read names off of a scroll."Susie Barkworth?" She called. Susie hesitantly put the hat on her head, sat on the stool and waitied for a few moments before the hat bellowed "RAVENCLAW!" Susie smiled obviously pleased with the outcome. Name after name was called. Until it was the turn of Scorpius. McGonagall asked, " Scorpius Malfoy?" Around the room she heard whispers at the sound of his last name.
He looked back at Thana with a worried look on his face. She gave him a reassuring smile and his face relaxed as he put on the hat. The hat took quite a bit of time deciding before the usual bellow of "SLYTHERIN!" The students at the Slytherin table cheered and welcomed him to the house. He looked quite shocked as he took the seat but returned the cheers and smiles.
It was her turn next. Her stomach did summersaults. It made her really self concious being in front of everyone. Then she heard the words she'd been dreading. " Thana Malfoy?" McGonagall called to her. Even more whispers spread through the crowd. Another Malfoy? They all seemed to be asking. She gulped and stepped up to the stool. She sat down, placing the hat on her small head as she did. The hat spoke to her, almost as if inside her head.
"A tricky one," it said," courageous but lacking confidence. Lots of abition in this one and cunning too. I'm seeing loyalty. Yes, loyalty. A brilliant mind too. But which house? I think it's got to be..."
"SLYTHERIN!" The hat shouted. Loud cheers erupted from the table in the far right. Thana smiled. She would be with her brother. She sat down next to him and gave him a quick side hug.
Her thoughts then went to Albus who was yet to learn his fate. He was up next. "Albus Potter?" The headmistress called. The room filled with excited mumbles. The chosen ones youngest son was about to be sorted. He was somewhat of a celebrity. He looked extremely anxious on the stool.
The hat took what seemed like forever to decide. The hall went silent. Anticipating. Then the hat bellowed "SLYTHERIN!" The whole school became a chorus of gasps and cries of shock. A Potter? In Slytherin? Thana, however smiled at him along with the rest of the house. Glad that they would be together.
