Snowy's Gift

Prologue

Snag padded through a misty forest, the stars glittering like a sunlit river through the trees above him. Everything around him shined with a beautiful white frost, but it wasn't cold. It seemed as though everything around him was covered in stardust. He looked around, not knowing what this place was. One minute he was chasing the biggest, fattest rabbit and was about to catch it, and now he was here...

"Hello?" Snag called into the forest. No one answered. Snag sighed and was about to turn back when he heard some mumbling from further in the forest. He dropped to a crouch and stalked forward, quickly heading to the mumbling without making any noise himself.

He found a bush and carefully crawled underneath it. There, he could peer out into a clearing. There were three cats sitting together. Two of their pelts glittered as brightly as everything else around them. The other cat looked like him. An actual cat. One of the starlit cat's pelt was a dark grey with black flecks. He had green eyes, and the light marking of a star on his forehead. The other one's pelt was a mottled grey, with tabby stripes. He had blind blue eyes, and was slightly more transparent than the tom next to him. The cat in front of them had a brown pelt with swirls and stripes. Snag also noticed that half of his leg was gone.

 Snag shook his head and snapped out of his thinking, straining his ears to listen in on their conversation.

"Leave the lake? Why? I'm the only medicine cat! What if my clan gets hurt while i'm gone?" 

~Clans?~ Snag thought to himself. ~What are Clans?~

"Your clan will be safe, Swallowbreeze. We're sending you away to help a cat in need."

"A cat in need?" The physical cat, Swallowbreeze, paused for a few seconds before he straightened up. "If it is to help another cat, i'd be willing to do anything. What do I need to do Pearlstar?"

~So the black tom is Pearlstar and the brown tabby is Swallowbreeze..~

Pearlstar turned his head to look over at the blind tom next to him.

"Travel the path all have taken, and to the last part of the past. You will face many snares and snags along the way, but you must reach the bird so her chicks may fly."

Swallowbreeze had a confused look on his face. "A.. bird? Travel the path? Jay.. I'm not sure what you mean."

It was at this point that Snag's tail twitched and rustled the leaves around him. Jay whipped his head around and stared directly at the bush Snag was in.

~Mousedung! He heard me!~ Snag froze, and could only watch as Jay began to walk over to the bush. Snag tensed up, and got ready to run in case he was found.

Although Jay looked as if he was blind, he had no trouble walking around and straight to Snag's bush. It was when Jay got a fox length's away from him that Snag bolted, running back the way he came. He leapt over sparkling rocks and ran around the glittering trees. He could almost feel the starry cat's breath on his tail, and Snag didn't dare to look back.

~Got to get away.. faster!~ 

Snag kept sprinting, and couldn't stop himself before he came to a cliff and slipped off. He turned in the air just in time to see Jay staring at him from the cliff before he hit the ground.

Snag jerked awake in his den, his dream still floating around like mist in his mind. The sun had risen, and his mate wasn't in the nest with him. Snag was shivering from both adrenaline and fear. He took a minute to collect his thoughts, and try to figure out what the dream was.
