Chug. Chug. Chug. The train continued down its tracks. My eyes scanning the train for my friend who had gotten up to go to the restroom. I looked back out the window, slouching down in my seat. I didn't know where we were going as long as she was with me, I would be okay. Chug. Chug. Chug. The train rolled to a stop. She stumbled back and fell into the seat next to me. She was drunk. I wasn't surprised... she drank whenever she had flashbacks or reoccurring nightmares about her parents. About her ex. She's been getting better though. The more we travel the less it happens. Hayley used to drink every night back home... if I can even call it that... now it's only once a week... it's not the best but it's occurring less and less.
Her head fell in my lap, as her exhausted and wasted body sprawled around the two seats next to mine. "This our stop?" I asked her as i looked out the window. Birds were chasing each other around as if it were a game of tag. Her wobbly hand raised in the air, as she make the thumbs down signal. I let out a breathe with a smile, I didn't want to move. I wanted to enjoy the views awhile longer. The next was an hour down, so I had time to rest, pack up and get ready to go. Hayley quickly fell a-slumber. The train took off again, the soft vibrations easing the pain in my back. Where are we going next Hayley...? Where are we going next.
After an long and relaxing hour we arrived at the next stop. A beach house.
"That's it..." Hayley said half asleep. I pulled her arm over my shoulder, and pulled my backpack over my other. She carried her own as we walked off the train and onto the sand. It was a weird place for a train stop, but then again Hayley had her ways. She pointed to the beach house I had saw on the train. I walked over there, her still leaning against me. She unlocked the door with one of the many keys that hung around her neck, I sat her on the red love seat that lay in front of the blazing hot fire, the flames danced about in their little home of a fireplace.I walked to the kitchen and found some tea bags. I brought her back the tea and sat it on the coffee table before sitting next to her. I can't wait till morning. We'll finally get to do something after 14 hours on that train. We could have gone on the plane, it would've been faster and cheaper... but me and her wanted to see everything. The train traveled all across the country before heading into the one we're in now. We're 4 driving hours away from home however.., we haven't gotten far. Neither of us have cars and Hayley has to renew her license anyways, but we don't mind. We want to make it all the way to Alaska. That's a ways away though. We sit in Europe, a whole-nother continent...
"There's bedrooms upstairs, pick any one you want, I'll sleep here, I'm comfy... we're staying for a week and then back to the train we go..." she muttered, her eyes closed.
"Okay, night Hayley..."
"Night Ivy" she mumbled before rolling over and smushing her face into the couch cushion. I turned on my heels and started up the stairs. I walked into what seemed to be Hayley's room. It was covered in baby blue and the whole room smelled of peppermint. I lay on the bed and sinked into the memory foam, I also snuck one of her peppermints from the small bowl sitting on her nightstand. What's next Hayley, what'll we do tomorrow?
