I got out of bed at 8:00 A.M. just like I normally do every Saturday. I head over to my desk and start my remaining homework from Friday. By 9:00 I have my homework finished and I hear my brother get up from his bed in the other room. I proudly close my algebra book and head to the kitchen.
I was surprised to see that my parents were already sitting down at the table. My brother, Liu came into the kitchen seconds after me while rubbing his eyes.
"Jeff, Liu have a seat. Your dad and I have some big news." My mother said.
Liu and I exchanged glances and both shrugged. We took our seats at the table and looked at our parents with curious eyes. Mom stirred in her seat and nudged dad. He quickly finished whatever he was texting and put his phone down with a small smile.
" Alright boys now we have lived here for many years and I know you guys have your buddies but it's time to move out of this plain town and to somewhere new! A great job offer has just opened up in Washington state! We are moving in three weeks! So be ready for that." Dad said enthusiastically.
"Sounds.....good dad....so what's for breakfast?" Liu asked a little agitated.
I knew perfectly well why Liu was upset. Liu's entire life was in this town. The school loved him and he had tons of friends. He had also recently found a love interest and was starting to make some progress with her. Now all of that was gonna disappear in three weeks. I myself am not to excited either but it's not gonna affect me nearly as much as it will Liu, but I'll be there for him and do everything I can to support my big bro. Liu simply left the matter alone and didn't complain because he was well...a good kid and didn't want to argue with mom and dad. It was just in his peaceful nature I guess, not a bad bone in his body.
"Well me and your mother are actually heading out to settle some things and prepare for the move, ya know Jeff is the only one to ever got up early in this family. In any case you and Jeff can just make something or wait and we can go all out for a late breakfast." Dad said plainly with a small shrug.
With that they left the house and drove off to run their errands. Liu grabbed a bag of chips and headed into his room. I wanted to go talk to him and comfort him but I figuered it was best to just let him sulk for a bit and maybe talk to him later.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next three weeks felt like they passed by faster than a school weekend. We took the plane to Washington. The plane ride was silent. Liu and I sat next to each other and mother and father sat together a few rows back. Liu was smiling looking down at a small piece of paper.
"What's that?" I said gesturing towards the small paper.
"Oh ya know the girl I told you about?" He said excitedly with a blush.
I nodded with an eyebrow raised in curiosity.
"Well she gave me here number, turns out she likes me too." Liu said with a warm smile.
"Awesome job bro. Congratulations." I said slightly envious but mostly happy for my brother.
I had never been lucky in the 'love' department. I also never really persued any girls either. I was felt on the outside of things never really being able to reach into the warmth of life. Socializing seemed like a forgien concept of little interest to me. I was content with just having my brother to talk to and sticking to staying up late, watching anime. I always did exceedingly well in school which made people seem even more distant. I couldn't relate to anyone's struggles. I was always content with life but never truly happy. There was always a thirst deep with in my soul, something that was never satisfied. It was something that I could never quite understand. It'd keep me up at night lost in thought. A hole, a void, a darkness that I felt myself slowly slipping into and that kept me in a wake of numbness. I could never connect to people, to this world... I felt a drift like a shooting star in space. Alone and constantly moving and feeling little to nothing.
Moving in was a long boring process that I loathed. I had never moved before and so this was all new to me. Washington was a beautiful place but quite gloomy. Once we were settled in my mother enrolled us to our new school. A new high school I thought would be no big deal get good grades and stick to myself. Simple. Easy. But I couldn't be so fucking wrong.
