It's been a couple days since I was forced to go to Charlie's house. At the end of that night, I ended up falling asleep on the floor beucause he was watching TV on the couch and fell asleep as well. But then when I woke up, I was on the couch and he had taken floor. That my friend, I found nice of him to do even though I didn't need him to offer me that.
Adam and I were walking down the hall together because today was the day where he and I both were going to be joining the District-5 team. Though I didn't want to, I had to and so did Adam. Adam and I were talking quietly amongst ourselves until we reached the door to enter the District-5 team's locker room.
As we stepped foot in the room, my father was there and greeted the two of us. Everyone else was dead silent and glared at us. You could tell that they hated us already by the looks of it. I spotted Charlie and he was making his way towards to say hi as well, until one of his friends or players on his team had stopped him by putting his hand out in front of him. The boy was shaking his head, "Cake-eaters, you might wear a Duck jersey, but you're no true Ducks," He was disapointed in us.
One by one, they filed out without a word to us. They were pist with us, they hated us and I did understand why. I mean, I hate them just as well, especially their captain, who I figured out was Conway. Charlie Conway. My dad turns to us and sets a hand on Adam's shoulder, "They'll warm up to you two in no time,"
My dad leaves and says he'll be waiting for us on the bench. Adam and I stood there, no idea of what to do now and where to go. We had all our Hawks gear and then on a stool, perched up against a locker, was mine and Adam's new gear for this new team. I sighed and snatched my stuff grumpily as I rounded the corner of lockers and took a seat at the far end of the room.
I unzipped my bag and quickly started taking my shoes and hoodie off so I could put my gear on. Adam had lazily grabbed his gear and taken a seat next to me. He got dressed rather quickly as well. At one point, I had almost started getting my Hawks gear on but then remembered that I am a Duck. They're a pathetic animal, they've go not teeth and half the time people shoot them to eat.
After getting dressed in the Ducks equipement, I stood up and grabbed my helmet. MY hair was in two french braides on either side of my head, it helped to keep my hair out of my face. But with my Ducks jersey, I had a different number than what I had before. I now have 89 and Adam has 99. Before he was 9, which is way lower than 99.
Once he had finished, we both headed out of the locker room. We skated to the edge of the ice and then made our way across the rink to the players' bench. Once we reached it, we both walked in and took a seat on the bench as all the others from the team were warming up with footballs on the ice. "All right, these guys have different plays and since you guys weren't here for our last practice, you two will have to improvise or I'll put you both on the same line,"
Adam and I nod, "Will you yell at us for something we do on the ice?" I asked, Adam knew what I meant and he was pretty attentive, but nervous a little. His hair was styled with gel to the side all ready and I found that a bug waste of time, unless he had it in since this morning and all day for school. That will be accepted by me, but what ever.
He shakes his head, "No, and unless you give the other team a point, then I might be upset," We nod and the whole team comes back to hear some rules. Coach Bombay had hit us both on the top of our heads on our helmets, I winced very little because my helmet wasn't on all the way.
Everyone looked at Coach and some glared at Adam and I. Giving us the stink eye and an unwelcomed look. "All righ guys, girls, if we win this game, than we go straight to finals. Let's do our best and have fun!" That's it! No big cheer to make the other team feel bad about themselves? "Quack!" They all started.
"Quack, quack, quack..." They continued, I didn't know what to do so I had just stood with everyone else and Adam by my side with all our hands in the middle as we raised them up and downa dn they cheered. I didn't know the cheer, it was some quack, quack, quacky, quack thing. I wasn't gonna quack. Apparently I'm not a true duck and only true ducks quack. "Quack! Gooo Ducks!" They cheered.
Coach had bumped everyone's head and those were the starters for the game. Adam was a center and there was about three or four others on this team who played centers as well. I assume the fat one was goalie, because if he played, than he'd be an enfocer. There was one enforcer and he sure did look like one to me. Better looking enforcer than the ones on my team. With my team, you couldn't really see who were the enforcers and who weren't.
Adam and I were starting off on the ice, along with their only goalie and then three other kids. I read the back of their jerseys and one was Conway, Hall, and Reed. I knew Conway and that was it. And apparently there was two Halls on this team, not one. I mentally slapped myself in the head as I stepped on to the ice and Coach told me where to go. He said that Adam, Hall, and Conway would be the first line. Adam was put as the centre while the other two took sides and Reed and I were put as defensemen.
I had to help guard our net when the puck came into our zone. But once in the other zone, I stayed a little furtner from the net because I am no longer put as a winger for now. Adam crouched down and got ready to play, his hockey stick in hand and ready to play. He had the puck within seconds and passed it back to Conway.
Conway continued down the ice until someone had checked him and he fell to the ground. I now knew that this was on me now since Charlie and I were both on the right side while Reed and Hall were left side and Adam covered most of the center with the help of the wingers and defensemen.
I turned quickly around and started skating backwards quickly, blocking the guy who came down the ice. I looked over to Adam and yelled out a word, 'Cut'. He knew what to do and he had quickly skated over, intercepting the pass that was about to be done. He rounded the player and passed it up further in front of him where I grabbed the puck and went down the ice on a break a way. I knew this probably wasn't acceptable of me to do, but I don't play defensemen, so that's my lie. I went for it and shot. I went as close as I could to the net and got it in. I had let hit the post and bounce right in.
We all gathered together and cheered, even though some didn't cheer too loudly. Once again, the game was started up again and as Charlie had the puck,he struggled to get a free way to pass to someone. Adam was at the bottom corner of the net while I stuck close by to prevent anyone from getting to him. Adam was calling out many times to get the puck passed to him, he was going back and forth in front of the net, the way Coach Reilly taught us.
I had checked someone to ground and Charlie passed the puck to Adam and he turned, one hand on the stick and got a goal. We all cheered together. As I was in the circle, Hall had pushed me and I fell on the ground, bring Adam down with me. The rest of them left, Conway was going to help but got shoved away by Hall. I hauled myself up and pulled Adam up with me as well as he looked at me, shaking his head. "Guess we don't fit in too well,"
"Nope... would you let me skate after him and knock him into the boards?"
"Hell, I'd let you do anything, you just gotta make sure Coach Bombay doesn't see, Schaffer," I nod and understood. I decided not to go after the boy and let him off with a warning. After the first period ended, the five of us entered the players' bench. Coach Bombay had stopped me and while he did, he kept his guard up, but also told the kids who was going on now and who wasn't. Moreau, Germaine, Karp, Mark, and Duncan was going on.
Coach Bombay looks down at me, hand on my left shoulder as he looks me in the eye. "What happened out there?"
I shrug my shoulders, "What do you mean? When your player shoved me to the ground and I brought Adam down with me? That?" I ask acting stupid. He nods and sighs, pushing me away towards the bench. I sit next to Adam and take my helmet off.I could feel some stares on me from the others. But I ignred it for now. I wasn't happy with them, but oh well.
