I dedicate this chapter to Holly_Wilson for being the first person who read the first chapter of this book and for being an amazing friend, not only on Wattpad but in actual life. Thanks for reading it first and commenting first too! Should probably keep it as a streak. Don't wanna lose that title! ;)

I took a deep breath as I thought about the first day of junior high. What if something went wrong? What if I fall over when I step inside? What if I spill coffee all over myself? What if I--

Nope. I have to stop thinking like this. The first day is going to be great! I try and convince myself... But I know, something unexpected always happens on the first day. Always. And, I know from experience.

"Come on! Let's do this, guys!" Miranda says gleefully. Jennifer, Hailee, and I all look at each other unsure. We must all be thinking the same thing.

"Are you sure?" I say while Miranda nods.

"We can't just be unsure all our lives! Come on!" Miranda replies.

We all walk into the school with all the confidence we can muster. Miranda, of course, has the most confidence and everyone likes her. No, loves her.

What am I even saying?

In freshman year, she had everyone's attention, all the time. Well, almost everyone, except for Mia, Emma, and Izzy. The Ooh-Aahs- yes, I know, really cringey name there. They were the meanest of the entire high school. Wait, is meanest even a word?

Anyways, they're the clique that knows they're the best, and they're also the richest of the entire school. Everyone respects them, but in secret, everyone actually hates them. They act like they're the most important of us all, and that we're only peasants.

As if! I scoffed.

But no, Miranda, Hailee, Jennifer, and I were a tight bunch who wouldn't be broken up by the Ooh-Aahs. Even though Miranda was always wanted by the Ooh-Aahs, and by wanted, I mean, the need for recruiting her into their "clique".

Let's just get straight to the point, we were walking in to our first class, which was sadly, AP Geography. Who the hell wants to do geography in the morning? We walk in to our class and there's our teacher, Mr. Lancliffe. And, I know, I shouldn't be complaining because Mr. Lancliffe is possibly the kindest teacher but when it comes to geography, he puts his entire heart into it. We all pile into the class, and the class starts.

"So, as you can see, Canada has the longest coastline of any country in the world at 243,977 kilometres which is 151,600 miles exactly. Now, if you have been paying attention in previous classes in the past year, you just might find it easy," Mr. Lancliffe continued on, "To complete this pop quiz!"

The whole class groaned. I, in fact, had no problem. I had actually been paying attention to geography in sophomore year. At least, I had been studying in the summer. Boring, I know. I can't help it, I've been aiming to get into the University of Waterloo. Seems hard, but if I worked hard enough, I could actually do it.

Mr. Lancliffe handed out the two-page pop quiz sheets, and we set off to work. 5 minutes in, I glanced at my watch and then, you could practically hear all those notification sounds. Miranda, being the bold person she is to check her phone in the middle of class looked at her phone and....

Fainted.

"Miranda!" I practically yelled and rushed to her side. I picked her phone up and read what was on the screen.

No. No. No. This couldn't possibly be happening. I can't-- I feel like I can't breathe. Oh my god...

"Kylenna? What's happening? What happened?" Mr. Lancliffe asked with worry clearly etched oh his face.

"My cousin, my-- he was," My voice cracks with every oncoming word. "He was murdered." I couldn't even believe what I just read. Were my eyes deceiving me? But, I knew, inside I knew; this was the truth and just the beginning. I dropped down to the floor and could feel the edges closing in on me. I felt someone catch me just before I hit the floor. And then, everything went black.
