"I'm sorry mam, we couldn't save him." the nurse spoke.

"What? You mean Colby's gone?"  I ask on the verge of crying. She nods her head. "Can I go see him one last time?" I ask.

"Of course sweetheart." she says. I walk into his room. If only I'd been with him that night in September. Colby had been hit by a car. He's been in a coma for almost two years now. I'd gotten used to him being gone. It was the twins that really worried me. I'd given birth almost seven years before he was hit by the car. Then there was Amelia. We'd adopted Amelia when she was ten, now she's sixteen. Amelia had been taking care of Ester and Ethan during the day until I came home from the hospital. I sigh deeply as I realize I'm eventually going to have to tell them what happened. Amelia and Colby had always been especially close. I sigh deeply as I leave the hospital. I slam my hand on the steering wheel.

"Fuck!'' I scream. I break down crying. My eyes blurring with tears. I start the drive home. I think about what happened. It was hard to think he was gone. I see the house appear. I slowly pull in. Colby's best friend and my brother , Sam, comes running out. He looks at me with concern. I nod my head. He pulls me into a hug. We walk into the house.

"The twins are down  Uncle Sa-.'' Amelia stops when she sees me. "Mom!'' she says. I smile at her sadly. "Dad's gone?'' she asks. I nod my head again. She starts to cry. I wrap my arms around her. This must be hard on her. I sigh deeply. I pick Amelia up and carry her to her room. Sam follows the two of us. I set Amelia on her bed. She curls into a ball and starts to fall asleep. Once we're in my kitchen, I break down.

"Why Sam?" I question.

"I've been asking myself that question since the day it happened. I'm in shock. My best friend's dead." he says tears falling from his eyes. I let out a sob as Sam opens his arms. I crawl into them and hug him. The love of my life was gone.
