We entered the viewing room where a large window showed the lab with all the equipment that we used when doing our experiments. Melody and Peter sat down a few seats from mine while I went inside to help with setting up everything.
"Blair, could you help me with lifting this up?" asked one of the assistants. She was trying to move one of the machines over to an empty spot in the room. I nodded and walked over, but before I carried it over, I gave a wink at Melody. She didn't know about my talent, my power, so this was an opportunity for her to see.
I lifted the heavy piece of equipment like it was a feather and walked over to the empty spot. I placed it down carefully and hooked it up to the wall where the outlet was. "Thanks, Blair," she said. "You're welcome," I replied and walked back into the viewing room. Melody was staring in awe at what she just saw.
"I didn't know you had that amount of strength!" she cried in amazement. I smiled. "Neither did I until I was little," I said. "It's something that I've gotten used to over the years." Melody was still in awe and she couldn't stop looking at me.
Finally, everything was ready to begin. The lab door was locked, and our frog that we were using was all set and ready to go. "Okay, start the gamma radiation," I ordered. Peter pressed a button and the gamma that was inside one of the machines was released and into the frog. We had placed multiple tubes into the frog so he would absorb it as the gamma flowed through them.
We watched on the monitor as the frog's warts started to grow but then decrease. I sighed a relief as this was just the start of the healing process, but just as I was going to gain victory for this first time, the warts started to bulge again. "No, no, no!" I said. "Not again!" They covered up the frog and just as the last amount of gamma found its way in, the frog exploded.
I groaned as Peter hit the stop button and sat down, placing my hands on my face. The experiment had failed...again. Sighing, I stood up. "I need to get some water," I said and left the room. Melody followed me. She found me leaning against the wall outside, upset about another fail. She walked over to me.
"Hey, it's going to be okay," she said, trying to comfort me. "I'll be you were very close this time!" I nodded. "Yeah, but we've always been close, and every time we think that we've done it, they all result in the same ending: exploded." I sigh. "This experiment is tough. You don't know how much this means to me!"
Melody shook her head. "This experiment was my father's doing," I explained. "My father was a genius. He was amazing! But, he never had the chance to make this work. He died fighting for the world, to save it from evil." Melody put a hand on my shoulder.
"I've heard of your father," she replied. "I guess maybe that's one of the reasons why I wanted to work here because knowing that he fought for us, working with someone like him would almost be like meeting him." I smile and chuckle a little. "He was a great father," I reply. I start walking back into the lab with Melody following behind me. I'm ready to try again.
A few days go by with no luck still. The frogs kept on exploding one by one. We even tried switching to toads because they had a lot more warts than regular frogs, but that caused the process to go quicker and the explosions were much more intense. One of the assistants had to leave the room to vomit.
During one of the work days, Peter went inside the lab to work on adjusting the equipment so when we attempted the experiment again, maybe the frogs wouldn't explode. I was sitting in the viewing room with Melody looking at all the results and the data we took on the experiment sighing.
Suddenly, there was a loud clang followed by the emergency alarm. Peter had accidentally unscrewed one of the gears and caused the gamma radiation to start leaking! I raced to get Peter but the door was locked. I grabbed it and pried it open, pulling Peter out of the room, but the door closed on me, trapping me inside.
