Living my new life was hard. I had a lot of rules to keep in tact and to follow. Always wear extra large pants and bras. Don't answer the door unless it's someone you know. Always wear a hood, hat, or sunglasses when outside. And never, ever, get angry no matter what happens. With those rules, I had to play it safe.
I did get many looks when I walked outside. It was strange to see someone who always wore their hood and kept their head down. If someone were to get a good look of my face, they would quickly turn away. It was the eye-patch. Of course it was. It's always weird and creepy when you see someone who wears an eye-patch. Sometimes people would ask me what happened to my eye. Usually, it was a kid but sometimes it would be an adult. I would always answer with the same response: "My eye was damaged and I can't see with it." A believable response.
Three months into my new life style and since the first incident, my relationship with Melody began to come closer. Of course we were friends, but it seemed to become more than that. That was when I actually decided to ask her on a so-called "date". She was surprised when I called her.
"You want to have a date. With me?" she asked. "Yeah, sure. I mean, it would be fun. Just the two of us, hanging out and doing something that didn't involve, you know, Hulk Girl."
"Of course, sure. That does sound like fun."
I smiled and invited her over in a week for dinner. It was nice, asking a friend on a date. I know, it was a bit awkward but it seemed like the right thing to do. I don't really identify as anything, but that doesn't matter. It's a date with just a friend.
When the night came for us to have the date, I was a bit nervous. I hadn't done this before, so I was a bit anxious, but I managed to make a roast chicken. I had just put it on the table when the doorbell rang. I smoothed my nice frilled shirt and long skirt, smoothed out my hair, and went to answer the door. However, it wasn't Melody. It was a woman. She had blonde hair and blue eyes, and on her face was a nice smile.
"Can I help you?" I asked carefully. "Hello, Miss Blair," she said in a thick British accent. "My name is Emily. I'm actually a friend of Melody's. She told me to tell you that she will be running a bit late. I'm terribly sorry."
"Oh, did she?" I asked. "That's alright." Emily smiled and stood there. Since I wasn't a rude person, I invited her inside. "Come on in," I said. "I actually just made dinner but I can get you a drink. Would you like one?"
"A glass of water would be nice," Emily replied. I went and poured her a glass. I gave it to her and we sat down on the sofa.
"So, you're a friend of Melody's?" I asked her. She nodded. "Yes I am. Melody and I used to work together before she went for another job. Very sad to lose her, but I guess she wanted something more...interesting." She took a sip of her drink and I continued to look at her. She was very polite, but I couldn't help sensing there was something off about her.
She noticed me looking at her and put her glass down. "Tell me, Miss Blair. You and Melody have quite the relationship, don't you?" I raised my eyebrows. "Oh, yes, we do, but...how do you know about me?" I asked. Emily smiled. "How rude of me. Melody told me all about you," she said. "Well, at least some things. I've been quite interested in you and your work for a while now." She stood up and walked over to me.
My heart began to race a little. Something wasn't right. She stood next to me and I stood up, looking her dead in the eyes. She spoke again. "In fact, your work has been something that I value, yet I have never been able to check it out. Me and my assistants have been trying for years to talk to you about what you do," she said. "And about your, who is it now? Oh yes. Your father."
I took a deep breath to calm myself down. She was trying to get a rise out of me, and I didn't need it. Then I spoke to her.
"My work is private. I'm sorry, but I can't tell you anything. And my father is dead, so you won't be able to find out anything about him. Now, please, I suggest you leave. Melody should be here soon and I don't think she would want to have someone else over." Emily smiled and turned to walk away.
