..., because the next day I got an amber alert for her. My phone started blaring like crazy, and when I picked it up it said that Alexandra Katherine Hillman had been taken 3 days ago, and the kidnapper was spotted in a black car with the license plate LVERSLMRNARAP.
"What the heck?" I thought, "What kind of stupid license plate is that." It was clearly custom, but why would you go through all that trouble just to make it some nonsense word. Before I could go more in depth, my mom came running into my room.
"Did you see the amber alert for Katie?" She asked/shouted.
"Yeah. Who would take Katie? She isn't involved in anything?" I answered/ wondered aloud.
"Or maybe the government knows she's your best friend, and wants to use her to get to you or Jane," she suggested.
"Mom, relax. You and I know full well that Katie's family has money to spare. Maybe somebody took Katie to get some ransom. And besides, how could the government know that Katie's my best friend?" I tried to calm her down, but it's easier said than done. Do you know how awkward it is to have to be the mature one in a conversation with your mother?
"I hope you're right," she said.
"How crazy does your life have to be when your best friend being kidnapped for ransom is the best case scenario," I joked. My mom chuckled a bit, but immediately went back into paranoid mode.
"Maybe you shouldn't go to rehearsal today, just to be safe," she replied.
"Mom," I started, "I'm not missing rehearsal just because something happened to Katie. And being close to Jane is probably the safest place to be. She's going to have all sorts of security around her now." She was silent for a bit while she contemplated what I said. Eventually, she spoke.
"Alright," she answered, "But anything, anything, seems wrong, I want you to immediately find me, alright?"
"Sure thing, Mom," I replied. She left my room to go make breakfast, and I went through my contacts. I needed someone who isn't going to be freaking out to talk to. I reached the bottom and figured he's as good as any. The phone only rang once before William answered.
"Hey, Lydia. Have you told Katie?" William asked.
"I was. Then she went and got herself kidnapped," I replied.
"KATIE'S BEEN KIDNAPPED," William hollered. I waited a second before responding so I could have time for my ears to stop ringing.
"Yeah," I replied, "Three days ago apparently. I just found out today. I was just looking for someone to talk to about that actually."
"What did the kidnapper look like," he replied as fast as he possibly could. Okay... maybe not the best option for "calm person to talk to".
"I don't know," I answered, "All anyone knows is that they drove away in a black car that had a custom license plate that read L-V-E-R-S-L-M-R-N-A-R-A-P." I spelled the license plate out, knowing that I wouldn't pronounce it correctly.
"What kind of license plate is that?" William asked.
"I don't know," I answered, "It probably has some kind of hidden meaning, but right now I want to find Katie."
"What am I supposed to do?" William replied, his voice cracking a couple of times when he spoke.
"I'm not asking you specifically," I answered hastily, "I just want to find her. Isn't there some sort of Uston technology that can track and find humans?"
"I think so," he answered slowly, "But it would take weeks for it to locate her, and the only person who has the authority to use it is the queen."
"Well ain't that convenient," I reply, a Cheshire grin growing on my face, "You forget who one of the queen's closest friends is."
"Oh yeah..." William said, "I could tell Jane if you want."
"It's fine," I respond, "I can tell her. Besides, she might have already heard it on the news."
"Alright," he said, "I'll let you call her. Bye Lydia!"
"Bye William," I replied, "I'll let you know if anything happens."
I hung up and immediately went to find Jane's home number. (She doesn't have a cell phone yet.) The phone rang twice before I heard Jane's tired panting. She must have been downstairs and ran upstairs to her room before answering. Smart girl.
"Lydia, what's going on," Jane whispered.
"Have you heard about the new amber alert," I asked, getting straight to the point.
"What's an amber alert?" Jane innocently asked. I rolled my eyes. I forgot sometimes that Jane's family kept her extremely sheltered.
"It's an alert that they send out when there's a missing person," I answered.
"Oh," Jane replied, "I think my dad mentioned something about it. Who's missing?"
"Katie," I stated. There was a moment of silence as Jane processed what I had told her. Then she screamed. Loudly. Straight into the phone. My ears rang for a solid 15 seconds before I continued, "3 days ago. I was just talking to William, and he said that as queen you had access to some high tech human finding technology."
"I might," Jane said, worry melting off of her words, "I'll talk to Sally about it. Don't worry we'll find Katie no matter what. No one messes with Trust Squad and gets away with."
"Let's stick to the finding Katie part of the plan before we arrive at the revenge portion," I replied.
"Hardy har," Jane said sarcastically, "I'll go talk to Sally. I'll get back to you at rehearsal."
"K," I replied before hanging up. I sat down on my bed, and just thought about everything that just happened. Suddenly the panic started to set in. Katie has been kidnapped. And no one knows where she is... or if she's even alive. I slowly started sliding off my bed until I was on the floor, but I didn't care. I just curled up into a fetal position, and let the panic get out of my system.
Soon the panic was replaced with numbness. I started to stand up, and walked over to my bookshelf. I grabbed a hard cover off of the second shelf and started banging it on my head until the numbness was gone. This was my routine for whenever the numbness arrived. And the only thing I have never told my mother about. Speaking of which...
"Lydia! Breakfast is ready," my mom shouted from the other side of the house. I glanced at myself in the mirror to make sure that the red blotches weren't completely noticeable. Afterwards, I walked down to the kitchen.
