The 20 minutes it took from me hanging up the phone to the sound of tires in the driveway seemed to take days. Becca and Connor joined me in the kitchen. We all sat at the small dining table, watching the birds flutter around in the distant trees. The silent air stung, knowing soon I'd be with complete strangers.
I walked to the front door, hugging Becca tightly before opening it. "I'm going to come visit you soon, once you settle down. Call me when you get there." Her voice nearly cracked. I avoided her gaze, for fear I might cry myself.
I walked up to the silver sports car, opened up the door and slid onto the leather seat. I sighed, not thinking about the consequences of my deep breath. The entire vehicle radiated his scent. It hit my nose and my core started to throb painfully. I bit my tongue to bite back the urge to scream. I wanted to writhe on the seat, but I held my composure.
"My pack is similar to yours, in that many of us live in a central pack house. It's located in the Rockies, and it's cold almost all year round. I figured you had little to no winter gear, so sometime this week my sister will take you shopping for some suitable attire." His voice was calm. Hearing him talked soothed me just enough to take the edge off of my horny body.
"I didn't know you had a sister." I was trying to make small talk. Like it or not, I was stuck with this guy for literally the rest of my life. Forever was a long time. Maybe i would learn to love him eventually.
"I do. Her name is Jenna, she is a few years younger than me, your age, actually." I realized I had no idea how old Lucian was. I looked at him, reading his face. He was young, but his refined stubble and rough appearance made him look older. And completely fucking sexy.
"How old are you?" I asked. "I'm 23. I took over the pack right before I turned 21, when my father died." His words hit me hard. I had no idea his father died. Normally Alpha is passed on when the prodigal son is ready to take lead, or under previous Alpha's death.
"I'm sorry." I didn't know what else to say. "Don't be. He was a horrible man at the end. We needed a change, and nature decided its course." He was so natural. If my father died, I would be torn apart.
The rest of the ride was mostly silent. I reverted to breathing through my nose to avoid my lady parts throbbing like a beating drum. The scenery towards Lucian's pack was breathtaking. On either side of the road were tall trees that blocked most of the sky. The road was bare, we passed two cars in the span of over three hours. I sat back, enjoying the amazing greenery.
We turned off to a black paved road, which was blocked with a large iron gate. Atop it had two dark stags that looked like they were battling, and their antlers merging into each other mid-turf formed a T shape at the top. On the driver's side was a black box with a keypad. He entered a long code, and the gate slid open.
The road wound around the hillside, conforming to the curves of the land. It was very windy, switching back and forth in direction. The hills were lined with various trees and thickened brush. It took nearly about half an hour after the gate to pull up to a half circled driveway. In the arc was a fountain, with a wolf in a howling position. The water was shooting out of it's mouth.
At the top of the arc was a brick pathway leading to the double doors of a large white mansion. It was three stories tall with columns in the front near the doors. The front windows on the base floor were large panes, and the tops were single windows, spaced evenly throughout both sides. The edge of the building was landscaped perfectly. Small bushes with budding blue flowers lined both sides, behind a freshly cut short grass lawn. It was beautiful, and easily two times as large as our pack house.
Lucian pulled next to the brick walkway. "Wait here." He said calmly. He stepped out of the car and walked around towards the front doors. Before he had a chance to grab them, they opened and a short dark haired woman stepped out. She looked much older than Lucian, surely not his sister. Her hair was a few shades lighter than his onyx, but still looked good against her tanned skin. She came up to about his elbow.
The woman hugged him, and walked with him towards the car, facing my window. Lucian opened the door, and stepped back to hold it. The woman reached her hand out to me.
"Miss Cambria, I am so happy you're here!" Her voice was hoarse, like she was getting over a cold. Weres rarely get sick, and when we do, it's often very bad. Most of us are bedridden for days.
I stepped out, towering over the small woman. I glanced down at her smooth skin, with hints of crows eyes. Her laugh lines were prominent, though the rest of her tan skin looked young and natural. I smiled and shook her hand firmly. She grasped my hand like a vice and pulled me in for an embrace.
"I'm Wendy, and this strapping lad is my first born. Like it or not missy, you're family now. And you will hug me and never call me ma'am. Makes me feel old." She sneered playfully. I liked her already. Wendy released my embrace, but not the grip on my hand. She led me towards the open door, leaving Lucian in our wake. I glanced behind me at him. His eyes were glued to me, and I couldn't quite make out the expression on his face. For a moment, it almost looked like he smiled.
