We wait in silence for the horde to pass.  I managed to get Judith to fall asleep, but we’ve been in here for almost an hour.  I still have my head on Carl’s shoulder, and he strokes my hair lightly.  Outside the door we still hear the sounds of dragged feet on the ground.

The silence in broken by gunshots.  We hear heavy thuds, I’m guessing someone is shooting the walkers.

“Carl? Ava?” I hear someone yell.

Carl scrambles to his feet and opens the door. “Dad?” he whispers.

Rick appears in the door frame. He wraps his arms around Carl.  “I’m glad you guys are safe.” He whispers.

I stand up, careful not to wake Judith, and walk over next to Carl.  He wraps his arm lightly around my waist, careful that his dad doesn’t see. I try not to blush.

“What happened?” I ask curiously.

“No time to explain, we need to get out of here now.” Rick blurted before starting to walk towards the door.  “Carl get your gun out, and be ready to fire,” He adds while pointing his gun up.

Carl and I follow close behind as we make our way through the prison.  We only come across a few walkers, so they must all be in another section.

Soon enough we make it outside, and into the car waiting for us.  Daryl is in the driver’s seat, and puts the pedal to the medal as soon as everyone is in the car.

“Where is everyone?” Carl asks.

“Up the road a few miles, we came back as soon as we realized y’all were missing.” Daryl answers.

“Someone attacked the prison, they broke all the gates, and blew up the doors and windows.  There were too many walkers to kill, so we had to leave.”  Rick adds.

“Do we know who it was?” Carl asks angrily.

“Some group, they must have wanted our little safe house, the can have it now, it and all its walkers.”  Daryl chuckles a little.

“And don’t worry about your stuff Carl, Maggie went back in to pack up your room for you. All your crap is in the car she drove.” Rick smiles.

“Man, I owe her a huge thank you!” Carl smiles back at his dad.

How can they be happy right now?!?! We have nowhere to live! We’re as good as dead out here!

Up ahead is a long line of cars in a cluster on the road.  We slow down as we get closer and I see a few people I recognize from before.  We park next to a faded old blue pickup truck, with tons of supplies thrown in the bed.

“Y’all can stay in the car for a bit if you want, if you need us we’ll be planin where to go next, by the red van.” Daryl declared before he got out of the car, with rick close behind him.

As soon as they close the doors I let out a small sob.  I strap Judith into her car seat, and turn to Carl.

He moves closer and wraps his arm around my shoulders.  “What’s wrong?” he asks.

“Where are we gonna live? What’s gonna happen to everyone?” I choke out.

He tilts my chin up so I’m looking at him. “You listen to me, we will be safe, I’ve been is this situation before, we’ll survive together.” He assured me, wiping the tears from my cheeks.

I smile at him, and try to keep it together.  “Let’s go find your dad and Daryl.” I suggest.

“Sounds good.” He says kissing my forehead, and getting out of the car.
