I sit on the cold, hard bed waiting to find out my results. If the council decides to kick me out I don’t know where I’m going to go. Is there even anywhere out there for me? Or was I going to have the same fate as my sister?
I hear low mumbles from another room, I assume it’s the council deciding what to do with me.
As I sit there waiting, I feel my eyes getting droopy. It’s almost like every time I blink, I feel my eye lids get heavier and heavier. I lay down on the bed, and curl up in a tight ball. I soon fall asleep to the soft mumbles coming from the other room.
I sit at the foot of the bed, watching my baby sister. I swear to god I’ll kill these people if they don’t take her in! She can’t survive out there on her own, she’ll be killed within ten minutes! I try my best to hear what the council is saying, but I can’t make out what they are saying. I rest my hand on my sister’s leg. I see her leg twitch as I place my hand on it.
“Ava?” I ask, questioning if she can interact with me. But with my luck, I get no response. I try to shake her leg, but my hand goes right through. “Damn it” I hiss. I suddenly hear footsteps creeping down the hallway.
I jolt awake, with the sound of footsteps getting closer and closer every second. I push myself up, so I didn’t look like I was sleeping. I tried to wipe the sleepiness out of my eyes. Suddenly the woman with short hair appeared at the cell door.
“The council has made their decision.” She began.
I feel my stomach tense up. I look at her and raise my eye brows, bracing myself for when she tells me I have to leave.
“Oh, I’m not telling the decision, the whole council needs to talk to you. Come with me.” She stated, motioning for me to follow.
I force myself to stand, even though I can’t feel my knees. As I’m walking down the hallway, my stomach feels… well it’s not quite butterflies, it defiantly doesn’t tickle. It’s almost like killer butterflies.
I walk with Ava and the woman. It’s not like I have much choice, where ever Ava goes, I am dragged along with her.
The woman takes me in to a room, where I see the council members sitting at the table.
“Have a seat.” The man with the white beard gestures to a chair.
I tentatively sit in the wooden chair. I cross my legs to keep them from shaking, but it doesn’t help much. I twiddle my thumbs as I wait for them to tell me that I can’t stay.
“We have decided you….” The black man starts. I try my best not to throw up from all the anticipation. “..can stay.” He finishes.
I look up in pure surprise. “W-w-what?!?!” I burst out.
A few of them giggle a bit at my reaction.
“You can stay honey.” The woman chuckled.
I let out a sigh of relief. I would have flipped the shit if they told my sweet baby sister she had to leave.
I look around with probably the stupidest grin ever plastered on my face.
“Thank you so much!” I squeal.
“What you did, with the little girl, that took a lot of guts. We could use someone with that bravery.” The one man said.
I just look around at everyone, glad that I might actually have a chance at surviving in this world.
“Let’s get you introduced to everyone.” Rick grunted.
Everyone got up and started to leave, so I took the hint that I should follow.
They took me to what seemed like a hang out room, with a few people in it. I saw Carl sitting on the couch, with a baby in his arms. Who’s baby is that?
“Listen up everyone, this is our new group member, Ava.” Rick began.
Carl looked up when his father started talking, and smiled at me when he heard that I would be staying.
These people better treat my sister right. Or else.
Rick introduced me to everyone in the group, I’ll probably forget all of their names, but they all seemed nice.
The last to be introduced was the baby Carl was holding.
“And this is my daughter Judith.” Rick announced, with a proud smile on his face.
“Where is she going to sleep?” Beth asked in her sweet southern accent.
Rick looked around puzzled.
“I have the top bunk open in my cell..” Carl offered quietly.
Rick gave Carl a ‘hell no’ look, and went back to thinking.
“That’s the only open cell, even the D block is all filled up.” Daryl added.
“I… uh… fine. But if I don’t like it, things are going to get moved around.” Rick growled.
“Calm down dad. C’mon Ava I’ll show you the cell.” Carl chimed in, handing the baby to Beth.
Are you kidding me?!?!? You people are gonna let my sister share a room with a boy?!?! That’s not right man.
Carl showed me to our cell, and gave me the top bunk.
“You seem tired, you should get some rest.” Carl urged, as he handed me a pillow and blanket from the bottom bunk.
“Aren’t these yours?” I ask, doubting if I should take them.
“I can get more. You need then more than I do.” He chuckled.
“Ok… Thanks.” I stuttered.
“I’m gonna go get more blankets, I’ll be right back.” He pipes. And with that he turned and walked out.
While he was gone I set up my bed, and managed to get semi-comfortable.
By the time he returned with more blankets and pillows, I was already drifting off. I felt him put another heavy blanket over my shivering body.
“Thanks” I mumble, before letting sleep take over.
