Chapter Twelve

Alice’s POV

“Are you sure you’re alright?” I ask again

“Yes, I’m fine; you haven’t answered my question, who are they and what do they want with me?” Jackie asked slightly annoyed at me repeating myself

“They are the volturi.” I replied avoiding eye contact with her

“Go on” she urged

“They are basically the rulers of our kind, who created the laws and also enforce them.” I continued.

“Ok, so what do they want with me I’m not a vampire?” she asked

“That’s the problem, you’re not a vampire but you know of us, and it’s against the law for a vampire to reveal themselves to a human” I answered

“So what were they going to do?” she gave me a worried look

I just sat there silent avoiding the answer and looking anywhere but her face because I knew as soon as I did I would break down and tell her, but I was afraid of her reaction, ‘what if she couldn’t handle the answer? What if she didn’t want anything to do with me anymore? What if she left and got hurt?’ these were the only thoughts running through my head but I knew I couldn’t hide the truth from her for long.

“Alice!” she broke me of my thoughts

“What were they going to do?” she asked again more worried than before

“They… They were going to kill you” I answered weakly the memories of what just happened running through my mind again.

Emotions flashed through her face so fast I couldn’t keep up, she sat there silent and still for what seemed like an eternity, until finally she went to speak but couldn’t seem to find the words, she sat there opening and closing her mouth, I couldn’t hold in the laughter.

“What?” she asked slightly offended

“You looked like a fish” I laughed out finally which made her laugh as well

After a few minutes of laughing we stopped and seriousness overtook us once again.

“Alice… we didn’t they?” she asked almost afraid of the answer

“Because… because I promised that I would turn you…”I answered with a sad look on my face.

“Oh” was all she said I think it was all she could manage before her stomach growled

I looked around it was getting dark it must be about dinner time, the time really does fly sometimes, I stood from where I was seated and offered my hand to help her up which she took with an embarrassed  smile on her face.

We walked back in a comfortable silence hand in hand, when we reached the house there were a few voices talking and some moving around but nothing out of the ordinary guided her up stairs and into the dining room just in time as Esme was bringing in something for her to eat.

“Thank you Esme, it smells amazing” she said looking at the plate in front of her.

“You’re welcome” Esme said with her usual motherly smile.

“HELL YEAH!!!!” we hear Emmett yell from the lounge making Jackie jump right out of her skin and drop her fork.

“It’s ok, it’s just Emmett playing video games again” Esme said reassuringly

“Oh, he frightened the life out of me” she said with a sigh of relief

Which made me laugh at how cute she was, sitting there trying to gather her wits again.
