Today’s a new day, Pierce thought.
Jaiden and Troop had left shortly after they made sure she had enough to eat. She felt better, but still not back to 100% yet. Thanks to the healing salve, her wounds had completely closed up.
Somebody had left a small tray of food at the foot of her cot when she was asleep. She devoured the bagel and carton of milk. For some reason, she still felt hungry after she’d finished everything.
I need to get out of here as soon as possible. The longer I stay, the harder escape becomes. Pierce eyed the one-way window, estimating the amount of strength it would break it. If she had been on top of her game, she was sure she could’ve broken it down within ten hits. But she still felt somewhat faint and weighed down, as if someone had shot lead through her bones.
Troop’s words kept on replaying themselves in her head. Someone’s been messing with your memories. Someone’s been messing with your memories. Someone’s been messing with your memories. It was as if his voice was stuck on a repeat loop.
“Shut up!” she yelled, then clasped her hand over her mouth, feeling embarrassed. Her eyes immediately flickered to the window, wondering if someone had caught sight of her outburst.
Dr. Spencer would never lie about my past, she reassured herself. But a little voice in the back of her mind kept on nagging her. Cook Asha thought Dr. Spencer was lying to you and look what happened to her. She’s dead. And Dr. Spencer hates it when you want to learn more about your life before the accident. And the fact that Troop knows so much about you supports the fact that he have met him before.
“Maybe Troop found out all of that information beforehand,” she muttered.
The voice returned. Why would he pretend to have met you before unless he really was your friend?
Pierce paced back and forth, wishing she could burst out of her tiny prison. She glared at the window once more then swung a fist at it.
Thunk!
It made a satisfying sound, but the glass didn’t shatter. It didn’t even crack. Pierce gave it a hard kick.
Thunk!
Miniscule spider webs of cracks appeared. No, she definitely had not fully regained her strength yet—her normal kick would’ve broken through the glass. But there was no turning back now. She had to flee.
Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!
The cracks grew wider, but the glass still wouldn’t shatter completely. To her surprise, Pierce found herself breathing heavily just after a few kicks. She gave herself a few minutes of respite before gathering up her energy and attacking the window once more.
Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!
“What the blazes are you doing?” a voice demanded.
A guy ripped open the door and thundered into the cell. He remained at the doorway though, and didn’t try to approach Pierce.
Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!
“Reinforcements needed at room 122,” he growled into his radio. “The girl’s berserk. Trying to break down the window or something.”
