Tony waited in his apartment for his love to arrive. He could hardly wait to see her again. Tonight he was going to ask her to leave her husband and marry him as soon as the divorce came through. She would have to say yes. He knew how unhappy she was in her marriage.
***
Danielle drove through the night. Her body tingled with anticipation. The way Tony made love to her made her feel so alive, the way she used to feel before she got married. He met her at the door with a fierce embrace. They stumbled inside and fell onto the bed.
An hour later as they lay exhausted on the bed Tony spoke. "Danielle, you know how much I love you, and I know you love me. Leave Perry and come and be with me. You don't love him anyway. You could get divorced and then marry me. We were made for each other, don't you agree?"
Danielle stood up and dressed herself. Finally she answered. "I have to get back. The answer is yes of course. It will be difficult but I'll talk to Perry about getting a divorce." She pulled Tony into an embrace and kissed him. "Soon I'll be coming back to you forever," she said with a smile."
She left, leaving Tony wondering if she really meant what she said. Did she really intend to leave Perry or did she enjoy the high life too much. Something about her eyes made him think she was lying.
***
Danielle arrived home at midnight, undressed and slipped into bed next to her snoring husband. But she couldn't sleep. She got up and went out to the kitchen where she poured herself a glass of wine.
Tony wanted her to divorce Perry, but how could she? She had become accustomed to living in a mansion with a housekeeper and cook, all her designer clothes and her jewellery, not to mention her own BMW to drive. She could stay married to Perry and keep seeing Tony. No, that was crazy, she couldn't keep doing that forever. Then it occurred to her.....she was a cheating wife. Her new life wasn't much different from her high school and university days when she often had two boyfriends at a time. What was she going to do?
She slumped back in her chair and cried.***
The next day it all came to an end. Danielle arrived home in the afternoon after a lunchtime visit with Tony to find Perry waiting for her.
"Hi darling, why are you home at this hour?" she asked with a sinking feeling in her stomach.
Perry was sitting in a lounge chair with a drink in his hand. He looked up at her. "Where have you been?" he asked.
"Just out shopping."
He glared at her. "Don't lie to me!" he snapped, "I know you were with your lover!"
"What? That's ridiculous," she stammered, "I don't have a lover."
"Oh Danielle," he sighed, "You can't stop lying, can you?" He picked up his iPad, flicked it on and handed it her.
Danielle looked through the half a dozen photos of her and Tony walking hand in hand on a street, kissing near the café, and even a night view, obviously taken the previous evening, of her and Tony in in each other's arms in the doorway of his apartment.
"I suspected you were cheating, so I hired an investigator to follow you. I've known now for over a week."
She sank into a chair, her world was crashing down around her. "Perry, I...." she started to say but he cut her off.
"I gave you everything," he said in a bitter voice, "Designer clothes, expensive jewellery, a mansion to live in, your own car, you never had to work again. This is how you repay me. I've moved your clothes and personal things into the guest bedroom. You can sleep there tonight. Tomorrow I want you out of my house. Go and live with your lover. And I've already spoken to my lawyer, he is starting divorce proceedings."
She stared at him in shock. "You're throwing me out, divorcing me?"
"Well what did you think would happen? Did you really think you would get away with this?"
Danielle felt anger rising. "Okay, go ahead and divorce me. I never really loved you anyway. And you can say goodbye to half your money and assets. I'll be getting my own lawyer."
"Half my money? Are you forgetting the pre-nuptial agreement you signed before we married?"
***
It was getting dark as Danielle parked her car, which was packed with her belongings, in the street in front of Tony's building. She walked across the lawn to his ground floor apartment and knocked on the door. The door swung open.
"Danielle, what is it?" Tony asked with concern.
"He knows about us and he threw me out," she said with tears in her eyes, "And he's divorcing me."
They sat on Tony's lounge. He put his arm around her. "Well this is good news isn't it? He divorces you and you walk away with a big settlement. He must be worth millions. Then you and I are set for life."
"No, I don't get a big settlement. When we got married he made me sign a pre-nup."
"A pre-nup? So how much will you get?"
"If we divorce in the first ten years all I get is my car and twenty thousand dollars."
Tony was silent for a few moments, then he pulled is arm away from her and stood up. "A car and only twenty thousand dollars?" he said.
"Tony, what's wrong?"
"Only twenty thousand," he muttered, "It should have been at least a million. This is a game changer."
She stood up. "Tony, what are you talking about?"
"I think you should go," he said taking her arm and pushing her towards the door.
"Tony, no. Are you breaking up with me? But we love each other. The money doesn't make any difference."
"Of course it makes a difference. And I don't love you. The sex was great, but Danielle, I knew last night that you were never going to ask Perry for a divorce. You loved the high lifestyle too much. I could see it in your eyes.....your lyin' eyes."
"And you only wanted me to get divorced so you could get your hands on the money you thought I would get. You're no better than me!" Danielle turned and stormed out the door, slamming it behind her.
When she got to the middle of the lawn she stopped and turned around. Was Tony coming after her to apologise and ask her to come back? No he wasn't. She sank down on the grass in sudden realisation that her life was in ruins. She no longer had a husband or a lover. She had nothing. As she sat there trying to work out what she would do, where she would go, the tears streamed down her face mixed with raindrops as rain started falling.
