Chapter 7
Four hours later it was around midnight. I turned to see Meg sleeping on Caleb. Caleb just stared at her, watching her sleep. I smiled and thought that Meg won’t be happy when she wakes up. Jacob laughed and Caleb whispered, “It’s worth it.” I smiled and turned back around to look at Jacob. He didn’t look tired, he seemed to enjoy himself.
“What is it?” I asked.
He smiled and said, “Meg, the things she is thinking in her sleep. Can you hear her Caleb?”
“No. what is she saying?” He whispered lightly stroking Meg’s face.
“You’ll have to ask her,” There was a pause, “Wait, did you say you couldn’t read her mind?”
“Yeah, it’s really weird. I can read her, like I can read her personality but I can’t read her mind or past or anything like that.”
“Maybe it’s because she is a top level witch?” I suggested.
“No, that’s not it. I can even read the top witch’s mind.” Caleb stated. “Um, Meg is shaking.”
I reached for the blanket that was spread out on the floor board and handed it back to Caleb; who had covered the sleeping witch. She didn’t stop.
“Caleb, wake her up!” Jacob screamed as he swerved off the road nearly flipping the car. He stopped for a second to breathe then continued on the road.
Caleb started shaking her and screaming her name. The startled witch opened her eyes and clenched on to Caleb. “Hey, it’s okay Meg. I am right here, and nothing’s going to get you.” Caleb rocked her, and ran his fingers through her hair.
“They’re coming,” She whispered between sobs.
“Who is my angel?” Caleb rubbed her shaking arms, and pulled her onto his lap.
“The demon, she is after us. She knows we are here! She’s coming for her.” She pressed her head against Caleb and sobbed loudly. Jacob reached between my legs for a yellow bag. He tossed it on my lap and searched through it. He pulled out a needle and handed it to Caleb in the backseat. Caleb seemed to know what he was doing and stabbed the needle into Meg’s arm. Her cries when silent and she fell back asleep in Caleb’s lap.
“Thank the lord,” I whispered, “What just happened?”
“She was stressed, and sometimes that causes witches to get these visions.” Jacob and Caleb explained.
“Okay, what kind of visions?” I looked back at Meg. Her brown hair lay all over Caleb’s chest. She looked calm. Her pale skin was flushed red from her panic a couple minutes ago. I could figure how she made her way up in the witch’s world. She was beautiful and extremely mature her age.
“They have all kinds of visions, some are dreams, some are of the future, past and present, and then some are messages.” Caleb said bringing me out of the world of thinking.
“Oh, okay… So, what’s up with you Caleb? Why are you so suddenly involved with Meg?” I didn’t realize he turned his head back toward the road.
Caleb opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by Jacob, “Demons have a bad habit of falling in love.” Jacob winked back to Caleb.
“No! We just have the power to read into a person’s soul, but I can not do it with her. Witches are not supposed to interact with us, but her soul is just… I can’t figure her out. She’s a challenge for me. I just want to be her friend. I want to figure her out.”
“Sure…” Jacob commented rolling his eyes. I slapped him in the leg and gave him a stare. He just smiled and continued to drive down the dark road.
