Chapter 3

I woke up and climbed out of the bed. Jacob wasn’t there so I left to find Meg’s room. I asked her for some clothes and she handed me a navy t-shirt with some cut off shorts. Forgetting she was in the room I slip on the clothes. I loved it; I didn’t miss those dresses one bit. I did miss my castle and my mother, but those things were all gone now.

I followed Meg into a tan colored kitchen. There was a small white fridge and a matching stove. It was accompanied with two small brown cabinets and a marbled counter. She went to the fridge and pulled out eggs and raw bacon. I sat quietly watching her make the food. Building up courage I finally asked, “Where’s Jacob?”

She gave a slight frown and looked around the kitchen. Just when she was about to speak Jacob came walking through the door frame. “Hey Sis,” He said. She smiled and slapped him with a piece of raw bacon. He sort of growled and sat down on top of the counter.

“Hey,” I said looking toward him but he avoided me. He looked a little upset so I asked, “Jacob, are you okay?” He finally met my gaze and his soft blue eyes had turned gray, the looked full of sorrow or maybe even anger.

“Yeah,” He mumbled and started playing with his hands. A couple minutes later he jumped down and walked into the cool night. I looked at Meg but she just shrugged and went back to her cooking. I made my way to the living room and turned on an old, brown tuner radio.

Through static the words came out in a sudden blare.  “It’s been five days since the beloved town of Fox Berge got attacked. It has came in that Princess Rose and Prince Copper have been found died.” A moment of silence, then in a joyful voice it spoke, “Right now Fox Berge is looking for a new king and queen. Tune in next Saturday to find out-” The static came out again. I quickly turned it off.

“They think I’m dead?” I thought out loud.

“Yes, that’s what we need them to think.” Meg said leaning against the door frame chewing on a piece of burnt bacon.

“Why?” I asked still staring at the dead radio.

“If they think you’re still alive they’ll try to find and kill you.”

“Who’s “they’?” I couldn’t think of anyone who wanted me dead so badly.

“The people who killed everyone at the wedding, they were trying to kill you. Luckily Jacob got there before they did. They call themselves the ‘Golden Crosses’”

“What would they want with me?” I asked feeling a little shaky.

“We don’t know.” She shook her head slightly.

I didn’t understand why they would want to take me. I might have power over a little town but that’s about it. I shrugged at her and stood off the leather sofa. I walked toward the sliding glass door in the kitchen. I slid it open and stepped outside into the cool fall night. There whole backyard was just woods. I was convinced that they really did live in the middle of no where.

I looked over to my right to see Jacob sitting on a white, wooden porch swing. I walked over and took the seat beside him. He had his hands buried in his hands and his elbows resting on his knees.

“Jacob, what’s wrong?” I asked pushing my shoulder into him.

He looked up at me, then down to my hand. He slowly took it in his and pulled us both out of the swing. As he pulled me into the woods the coyotes howled and the still swinging porch swing creaked. He was going to kill me. My body started to shake and my heart beat went faster with every leave that crunched under my bare feet. I looked up at the stars and a warm drop of water fell onto the bridge of my nose. Then it started to pour but he kept pulling me through the woods. We finally stopped at a dark cave entrance.

“I’m not going in there,” I crossed my arms but he pulled me through anyway.

We kept on going through wide and narrow spaces until the sound of water welcomed my ears. A waterfall stood high, proud, and beautiful. We climbed to the top and sat on the cool dusted rock.  I watched Jacob pull a knife out of his pocket. My heart froze, as he opened it slowly. He took me to this beautiful place to stab me and then throw me down the waterfall! A sigh of relief came out of me when he turned to the rock and started digging the knife into the rocks hard surface. My head tilted to see what he was writing but I couldn’t make out the letters. Finally, he looked up at me and said “Willow,” I looked into his mourning gray eyes. He’s wet blonde hair trying to cover those eyes. He’s wet, red shirt stuck to his muscular chest and his soaking blue jeans hid nothing. He was beautiful.

 “Yes?” I finally answered.

He sighed deeply then asked, “What happened to your father?”

Confusion entered me; he didn’t know anything about my father. Did he? He’s probably working for someone and wants to gain information before he kills me. Crap, I didn’t even have my dagger.

As if reading my mind he whispered, “You can trust me; I’m not going to hurt you.”

I sighed, “When I was thirteen our castle was attacked. There were fires and guns, mostly people begging for their lives. Everyone died, there was so much blood. We were all sitting in the church. There was a safe room under the alter were you could see everything but no one could see you. There was a loud sound. Maybe it was a bomb? We couldn’t find my older brother rick so my father went looking for him. I couldn’t see my father but I heard him scream.” My body started to shake as the familiar memory echoed in my mind. “Some young boy asked for a girl and then everything went silent. After what seemed forever I rushed out to find my father dead with a single rose in his hand.”

I stared at Jacob but he was just staring at his carving. There was something about him that worried me, like he knew something. Something about me that made him so upset to even look at me.

“Jacob, what do you know?” He looked at me funny then went back to his carving. So, I tried again, “Why do you act so weird around me? You ignore me now, why?”

“Willow…” He said but stopped.

“What is it?” I said shaking; I where’s the dagger when you need it? He looks at me with sad eyes then takes the flashlight out of his pocket. He shined it on the carving.

It said ‘I’m sorry’ which I didn’t know why.

“Sorry for what?” I asked I was now more scared then ever. He was going to kill me. That’s why he was sorry, I knew it. It’s every girls dream to be here with the man she loves, not her murder.

He slowly reached down and placed his hand on my neck. I closed my eyes expecting the worst when the warmth of his lips reached mine. I softened and reach around his neck pulling him closer. His tongue went across my lips before he pulled away. I was breathless and my lungs hurt. He pulled me closer as I wrapped my arms around his waist and held on as tightly as I could until an hour before sunrise.
