"No, no, no! This is all wrong! Come on guys, I expected better than this," John scolded, and many of the boys sighed.
"Hey, John. Can I have a word in private?" Paul asked, and John looked distracted but said nodded and took him aside into a corner.
"What's going on?" Paul asked, and john couldn't help but smile from ear to ear.
"I just want... perfection. That's all," John stated, but Paul looked into his eyes and could tell that it was more than that.
"The truth, please?" Paul boldly requested. He had become somewhat used to John and felt more comfortable around him now.
"Okay, truthfully, I want this to be special because my mom is coming," John said, and Paul felt a ping of sorrow in his heart. His mom would never see him perform again. He would never see her smile again, or feel her warm embrace.
"Oh," Paul said flatly, and he felt heartbroken and envious a bit. John could tell something was wrong with the lad, but he felt like it wasn't his business. If Paul wanted him to know, he would've told him what was wrong.
As soon as they got on the stage, John spotted Julia. He pointed to her and she smiled.
"This goes out to my beautiful mother. I'll always love you," he said, and she smiled at him again. It was a smile that he could wait years for. They began to play, and the crowd got pretty rowdy. Everyone danced and drank, and there was even a bar fight, but they just kept on singing. They were all sweaty and out of breath by the time they finished. They were cracking open beers backstage when Julia appeared.
"Oh, Johnny! That was amazing!" She squealed, and hugged him tightly. He wanted to stay in this moment forever, because this is the only true, complete love he'd ever felt, and he wasn't ready to let that go. He couldn't.
Julia met Paul, and they all laughed and chatted a bit. She was also very impressed with his skills. She danced a bit with John, and then decided it was getting late and it was time to go home. But she would never make it home, and John wouldn't get the call until the following morning.
