I walked in the front door of my home. I couldn't get one second to take my shoes off before getting a lecture from my mom.
"Cassidy Delilah Linley, where have you been? Your brother got home one hour ago. I've been worried sick. Explain yourself, young lady."
If you're wondering, my bro is older than me. I'll tell you more about him later.
I had to think of something fast. Then, it hit me.
"I was assigned an English project on the first day of school. My partner happened to live next door and we shared our ideas on the walk home. He was very creative so it took him a while to get all his ideas out."
"Okay. Next time give me a heads up before it happens. Now go get ready for dinner. We're going over to our neighbors and we need to look nice."
"Okay."
The only clothes I had were the ones the organization gave to me and they were all donations. There was actually some nice clothes in my size.
I settled on a white t-shirt and a black and white skirt with a leafy design with a pair of white sandals.
We walked over to their house that was bigger and nicer than ours.
I walked in to see a sight I have only dreamed of. A nice open concept kitchen, family room, and dining room. The modern white and gray kitchen had a peninsula made into a breakfast bar. My favorite part was the gray laminate floors that made the space flow so well.
"Mrs. Anthony, you have a beautiful home." I couldn't find another way to say it.
"Thank you sweetheart. Now Carla, are these your lovely children."
Now she was talking to my mom.
"In fact they are. There is one that could not be here today. Her name is Adrianne. She's off at college. Anyway, this is my only son Ethan and my youngest Cassidy."
Ethan and I both gave a small wave.
Mrs. Anthony called up the stairs. "Leroy, Stephanie, Megan, and Colby…get your butts down here right now!!"
In sync they all yelled back 'just a second mom'
Just as they stated a couple seconds later, three of them came rushing down the stairs. I only recognized one. He mouthed the word hey and winked at me I could feel a red tint start to show on my cheeks.
"Where is Stephanie?" asked Mrs. Anthony.
"In the bathroom" they all said together.
"Okay. So these are my twins, Colby and Megan." She pointed to a boy and a girl about Ethan's age. I could tell that they were twins."And this is half of the other set of twins, Leroy."
They all waved like Ethan and I did.
If you guys would like to go outside while Ms. Linley and I prepare dinner, you can.
Leroy shook his head and I understood what he meant. We walked over to the breakfast bar and he took a seat.
"Would you like any help?" I asked.
"No thank you sweetie."
Only five minutes later we saw all the 17 year olds walk in and we decided to go take a seat.
"Carla, do you mind giving all the kids their plates while I go check on my daughter?"
"No problem."
She walked downstairs in a matter of seconds. "She told me she doesn't feel good."
Leroy smirked and so did his siblings. Hmmm…I smell something fishy???
And it wasn't the food. We had chicken parmesan with a side of mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. I ate everything besides some of my mashed potatoes.
"I hope you all saved room for dessert because it will be ready soon."
Leroy whispered to me that soon is about 45 minutes in his home so he would show me his room.
Okay. This is getting too personal and weird. But I don't want to be rude.
