"They said your ribs are broken but they look like their starting to heal- which means you knew about this and didn't say anything." Coach had rushed to the hospital to see Odell like he said he would. As soon as Doctor Layfe told him about Odell's condition, he couldn't help but to be became angry.
Odell was to busy concentrated on trying to move his legs to hear what he was saying. The crazy amount of painkillers they pumped through him he couldn't feel to much of anything.
"Are you listening to me?"
"No." Odell said lowly as a slow tear rolled down his face. Not even a hint that his toes were wiggling beneath the thin fabric of the hospital sheets. He was truly putting in the effort to move the ten digits but it was like his lower half and mind had lost signals to one another.
Coach sighed as he took a seat at the foot of the bed. "Forget what I said. Just know that I'm here for you Beckham, I can't speak for the whole team, but I know your fans are too. I called your mom and she said she's gonna fly out here as soon as she can." He looked at his watch. "I got some business to take care of but I'll be back as soon as I get some free time." He rubbed Odell's shoulder giving him one more glance before leaving out the room.
As the door clicked signalling it's close Odell groaned out in anger. He mustered up a enough strength to knock off the small water cup and the serving tray next to his bed in frustration. He tried moving his legs again but failed miserably. There was a knocked on the door interrupting his tantrum. He took some deep breaths and wiped his face before talking.
"Yeah, come in."
The door opened again and Jade came through slowly still wearing his coat. "Hey." She looked at the floor and picked up the tray and tossed the cup in the trash hearing the ruckus from the other side of the door. "I didn't take you as the get mad and flip shit type" she tried to joke as she stripped herself of the heavy blue material and draped it over a plastic chair in the room. Odell wanted to laugh or give her some kid of smile but he just couldn't.
They sat there in awkward silence for a while before she finally got closer to him.
"Can I hug you?" He didn't want to be bothered with anyone at the moment but he couldn't seem to tell her to get out so he settled with giving her a nod. She sat on the edge of his bed gently and wrapped him in a warm embrace, being mindful of his side and the tubes running every which way from his arms. He hesitated thinking of Alex suddenly but saw no sign of her. Odell did his best to wrap weak arms around her feeling comforted by the gesture. As they let go of each other Jade fixed his hair seeing it had been matted down still from his helmet.
Doctor Layfe quickly performed a CAT scan on him and saw what he feared most. A broken Lumbar. A injury that one could come back from with a lot of physical therapy. But for some the damage can be permanent. His head was fine so they were able to get the helmet off of him with no problem. As soon as he told Odell the news regarding his back he wasted no time signing papers for surgery. He could've waited for his mother but the longer the wait the more permanent the damage could be. While Odell waited for the nurses to prep him for surgery the hospital allowed him some visitors. That was after making sure they were who they said they were making sure the two visitors weren't crazed fans seeing as though they was a crowd forming outside shouting up praises hoping he'd hear. They hoped it would raise his spirits but with the situation at hand how could that be possible?
