You're Not A True Friend

The Thursday after Alec came back to school, me, him, and Maci went to lunch together. Emily wasn't at school that day and I wanted to see how Maci would act without Em around. She was all over him; flirting with him and not having a care in the world about what Emily felt about it. Emily and I have a way of telling how Maci likes someone. All you have to do.. is wait for her to smile, and if she likes the person as more than a friend her smile is crooked. And that very smile, was spread across her face.

When we got done eating me and Maci walked outside of the cafeteria, with Alec a good 30 feet away. "You like him. I can telllll." I said grinning. She elbowed me and threw her head over her shoulder, along with her crooked smile.

"Shh." She said laughing a bit. We kept walking and she stopped to wait on Alec. Our principal thought it was too cold to stand out in the courtyard after lunch so the whole, 7th-12th grade, had to go into the gym for a good 30 minutes. We had a normal spot that we sat in because we had to go in there at least 4 times a week.

"Did Emily tell you why she wasn't here?" I asked Mac. She shook her head as she continued to goof off with Alec. I couldn't lie, they were adorable together and I whispered that to Maci. She smiled that crooked smile again.

During 6th period, Alec sat behind Maci in study hall and I beside her. This girl named Bianca sat in front of Maci and we all wrote notes to each other, because we aren't allowed to talk. Maci let me read her and Alec's note and then her's and Bianca's. Bianca was encouraging Alec to ask Maci to be his girlfriend and was convincing Mac to say yes.

Me and Maci were writing a note and she said that Em was already mad at her for liking him and that she would be pissed if she dated him. I told Mac that she was probably right but if she was a true friend she wouldn't but I had also told her that if Emily was a true friend she would let her be happy with they boy that she likes. Another one of our friends, Halle, was also encouraging Maci to say yes to Alec. I read the new "messages" on Maci and Alec's note. He had asked her to be his girlfriend. She said yes.

She looked at me, again, with her crooked smile. And I was just waiting to see what Emily was going to say about it.

The next day at school, Emily was back and Maci hadn't told her the news yet. Mac looked at me and smiled and I smiled back. I mouthed the words, "Did you tell her?" and she shook her head. Me and Emily had the 1st period together and Maci mouthed back, "Will you?" I nodded and then the first bell rang. Emily and I started walking to our class after we got our binders out of our lockers, "Guess what happened yesterday." I said.

"What happened yesterday?" She asked looking at me. I didn't know whether to actually tell her or to let someone else. But I had told Maci that I would and it would make Em even more mad than she already was if she heard it from someone other than me or Mac.

"Well. Yesterday in 6th period, when Alec and Maci were passing notes, he asked her out.."

    "And what did Maci say?"

"She said. Yes." Emily stared straight ahead. I couldn't tell if she was hurt or if she felt betrayed. Probably a little of both..

"Are you serious?!" I nodded in response. I really didn't want to make Em mad at me, that was for sure.
