The siren sounded loud and clear all throughout the small city of Gwanju. If blown once, it could only mean a minor danger and everyone should be prepared for it; if twice, it was best to evacuate the area to the safe homes and if thrice, the only thing the citizens should do would be to hide and pray and hope that they survive this situation. These signals were known all throughout the land, across the vast oceans and the high mountains and Gwanju was no exception to it.
Every citizen stopped their work midway to listen to the noise, each holding their breath to know the intensity of the danger. One They counted and waited for another signal to come, hoping it wouldn't. The signals hardly ever left one and it had been quite a few years since even that had gone off. Yet on that day, after years of no fear from dangers of foreign bodies, the citizens heard a fateful Two.
As soon as the second signal rose, the city turned to chaos. Everyone rushed to gather their belongings, to check on their loved ones and carry as much as they can to their safe homes. Shutters rattled down, each window was closed and all the doors were locked shut. In the midst of the chaos, children were being left behind, mothers cried and fathers were ushering their kin to safety. On way, food and even the simpleast necessity of water was being faught over. The Commands or the given police of the city tried their best to usher the crowd back to safety, sweat and dust evident on their foreheads. It had been decades since the last signal and now that it finally came, it was of the second level.
Three
The third signal rang over the chaos in the city. Heads whipped in the direction of the signal, a deadly silence overtaking the screams from before. No one dared to move, speak or breathe. No one wanted to believe. Three wasn't something anyone wated to know. There had been no Three in over a hundred years of history. And now, after a long time of peace with the unknown, the signal rose for everyone to run for all they love.
A shrill scream started it off and the chaos from before seemed like a kid's rehearsal. People trampled over anything that came across their way, living or not. Everything remained forgotten till they had gotten in to their safe homes. Many turned to run in to the woods, avoiding the chaos in the small city. It wasn't a developed area like those of the 12 Clans and everything has it's limits. Even the safe homes, not used for over decades could not hold the population of the small city. There weren't even enough resources to protect this city against the danger. It turned to be every being for himself.
In mid chaos, there was one particular person sprinting in the opposite direction of the crowd. Her heart beat wildly as she took in the sight of the mess her once beloved city was in and the only thing she could think of now was to see if her younger sister was okay. Crippled and damaged, her sister could not have gotten out of the house on her own. She cussed. Of all days to paint in the woods, she had to choose just this one. Now she doesn't even know if her sister was out or not.
"Susanne!" she called desperately as her small cottage came in view. "Susanne! Answer me, God dammit!"
Her legs were screaming against the constant running, something they weren't used to. She ran past her small lawn and swung the door open. There seemed to be no living being present. Her heart gave a loud thump. No... Susanne!
"Susanne!" she called out again, desperately staggering in the house. "God please just answer to me Susanne. Where are you?!"
She ran in the house and up the small flight of stairs. Her feet immediately led her to her sister's room.
"Susanne!" she cried out as she opened her bedroom door.
"Jean," a small muffled voice came from the corner. "Jean, help me. I'm scared."
