"How long now?" Jean grunted. They'd been walking for good three days, hardly speaking.
They'd crossed the terrain without difficulties. Somehow, Jean felt that Nature was helping them. It could never be that easy. All the trees would shade them when the sun was at it's peak, water would sprout whenever they turned thirsty and there was never a sign of any animal around. It really couldn't be this simple. It wasn't supposed to be safe outside of the perimeters of settlements.
"A few miles walk more," Hyojin called. She'd managed to climb up on a rock again, seemingly without difficulty and was staring at her hand.
"How do you even do that?" Jean sighed, dumping her small but astoundingly heavy backpack on the floor and sitting.
"Do what?" Hyojin said and jumped off the rock, landing perfectly on her feet.
"That," Jean gestured. "The climbing like you're just walking and then jumping off and landing like a cat."
"A cat?" Hyojin asked, confused. "What's a cat?"
Jean stiffened. Shit. She just slipped out something she wasn't supposed too. Hyojin walked over and sat beside her, scooping up some water that had appeared and drinking it.
"It's something of my imagination, actually," Jean explained.
"So what is it?" Hyojin tilted her head back against the rock and closed her eyes.
"Hmm, it's more of an animal, actually. Walks on all four legs, has a tail, fur all over, beautiful eyes, amazing ears and is one of the most graceful things out there."
"So... kind of like a sdon?" Hyojin asked, still with her eyes closed.
"No," Jean chuckled. "Not like a sdon. Sdons are gigantic, not so pretty looking, only brown in color and completely wild."
"Aren't cats?"
"Well, I presumed cats to be smaller beautiful creatures of different colors. The way they walk reminds me of how the ladies strut. And I think they could be domestic."
"That's a well thought out creature you have there," Hyojin smiled.
"Well, I do have an imagination," Jean sighed and took the paper out from her back pocket. She stared at the names, reading and rereading it.
"You know, you do that every time we take a break," Hyojin stated. Her eyes were locked on the small piece of paper. "You must have learnt it by now."
"I learnt it on the first go," Jean responded but kept on looking at the paper. "I just want to make sure what I learnt wasn't wrong."
Hyojin remained silent. She wasn't sure what to say and with a few more hours of walking left, she wanted to save up her energy.
Both Hyojin and Jean kept the peace, Hyojin going through her backpack and Jean reading and rereading the tiny piece of paper. The names weren't the only thing she was looking at. She wondered why these 12 were chosen, just like her, and would they ever take on the responsibility.
"Hey Jean," Hyojin called after sometime. "Have you noticed that we haven't really come across any discomfort this entire time?"
"As in no food shortage, no shelter problems and no-"
"Creatures that would enjoy to devour us," Hyojin nodded, cutting off Jean's reply.
"Yeah, I have," Jean sighed and got up. "Looks like Mother Nature is helping us. I hope she does that all the time."
"I don't know about that. This is kind of unheard off. But then again, so are 12 Elders."
"Isn't this just the third generation? Isn't it okay to be having new options? Like a first of everything?"
